Dishwasher Not Starting? 5 Common Causes

A dishwasher that won't start at all --- no sounds, no lights, no response --- or one that starts briefly then stops is a straightforward problem to diagnose. Most causes are either power-related or safety-related. Here's how to work through them.

1. Power Supply Issues

Start with the basics. Dishwashers are connected to a dedicated circuit --- check that the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If the breaker is fine, confirm the dishwasher is receiving power. Models with a display or indicator lights that are completely dark (not just the cycle not running) suggest a power supply problem.

Some dishwashers are hard-wired; others use a standard outlet under the sink. If yours has an outlet connection, check that it's firmly plugged in. Check also that any wall switch controlling the dishwasher outlet (sometimes installed under the sink) is turned on.

2. Door Latch Not Engaging

Dishwashers are designed not to run unless the door is fully latched --- it's a core safety feature. If the latch mechanism is worn, broken, or misaligned, the door latch switch never closes and the dishwasher won't start even if everything else is working.

Test it by firmly pressing the door closed --- you should feel and hear a solid click. If the latch feels loose or doesn't click, or if you have to push hard for it to catch, the latch assembly needs inspection. Sometimes the plastic latch tab breaks; other times the strike plate shifts. Both are inexpensive to repair.

3. Control Lock / Child Lock Is Active

Most modern dishwashers have a control lock feature that disables all buttons to prevent accidental starting. When it's active, pressing buttons does nothing --- and it can feel like the dishwasher is completely broken.

Look for a lock icon or 'Lock' indicator on the display. To deactivate, typically hold the Control Lock button (sometimes labeled 'Heated Dry' or 'Lock') for 3 seconds. Check your user manual for the exact button combination for your model.

4. Delayed Start Is Set

Many dishwashers have a delayed start feature that holds the cycle for 2, 4, or 8 hours. If this was accidentally activated, the dishwasher appears unresponsive --- the door can't be opened, buttons don't start the cycle, and nothing happens. Check for a delay indicator on the display and cancel it per your manual.

5. Thermal Fuse Has Blown

Dishwashers have a thermal fuse that trips if the machine overheats. When the thermal fuse blows, the dishwasher won't start at all --- there's no power to the controls. Unlike a dryer thermal fuse, dishwasher thermal fuse failures are less common but do occur, particularly on older machines.

Testing a thermal fuse requires a multimeter and accessing the control panel or junction box. This is a technician-level diagnosis, but the part itself is inexpensive if that's the cause.

6. Faulty Control Board

If power is confirmed, the door latch is working, the control lock is off, and the delayed start isn't set --- a faulty main control board is the most likely remaining cause. Control board failures can cause the dishwasher to be completely unresponsive or to stop mid-cycle.

Control board replacement is a technician repair. Before agreeing to a board replacement, ask the technician to confirm it's specifically the board and not a wiring harness issue, as wiring problems can produce the same symptoms.
