Know your KitchenAid
Dishwashers: KDT top-control, KDF front-control, older KUD series
Today's machines are a stainless tub as quiet as 39 dBA, with a third rack, a pull-out filter in the tub floor, and either Advanced ProDry heated drying or a door that pops open at the end of the cycle. The older KUD series used a hard-food grinder instead of a filter and a different pump layout, so we confirm the model number from the door-edge tag before ordering.
Freestanding refrigerators: French door, multi-door, side-by-side
The KRFF and counter-depth KRFC French door models, the five-door KRMF706 with the Preserva Food Care System (two separate cooling systems, one for the fridge and one for the freezer), and the KRSC and KRSF side-by-sides. Many of the French door units put the ice maker inside the left fridge door so the dispenser can sit on the front, and that is where a lot of the trouble starts.
Built-in and undercounter refrigeration
The 42 and 48-inch built-in side-by-sides (KBSD and KBSN series) stand about 83 inches tall, sit flush in the cabinetry and take hardware kits and, on some models, cabinet panels, so we repair them in place. Undercounter units include beverage centers, drawer refrigerators and the 15 and 18-inch ice makers with Clear Ice Technology, which freeze a clear slab and cut it into cubes on a heated grid.
Ranges: slide-in, freestanding, double oven and commercial-style
Slide-in and freestanding ranges come gas, electric, dual fuel and induction, including double-oven versions with two cavities. The commercial-style line runs 30, 36 and 48 inches wide in gas, dual fuel and now induction, with Even-Heat True Convection ovens and high-BTU burners; the 48-inch units add a griddle. Igniters, oven temperature sensors and the controls are the usual repairs.
Cooktops and wall ovens
Gas, electric radiant, induction (including downdraft induction) and the commercial-style gas rangetops, then single, double and microwave-combination wall ovens with Even-Heat True Convection. Glass tops, touch controls, bake elements, igniters and the door lock that runs the self-clean cycle are what we replace most.
Stand mixers, blenders and other countertop pieces
We do not repair these. We work on the major appliances only, and for a mixer or blender you are better served by KitchenAid's own support line for countertop appliances, which is separate from its major-appliance line.
What fails
What actually breaks on KitchenAid appliances
- 1
Dishwasher leaks a little water onto the floor at the front
On the current generation of KitchenAid dishwashers the diverter motor sits under the tub and turns a valve that sends water to the upper or lower wash arm. The seal around its shaft wears, water seeps out of the sump, and it runs forward to the front edge, so people blame the door gasket first. The repair is a new diverter seal, and a new motor as well if it is binding.
- 2
Top rack sags, tilts or drops off its rails
The upper rack rides on plastic adjusters with small wheels. The adjusters crack and the wheels split with age, the rack drops on one side, and the spray arm underneath starts hitting the dishes. The fix is a rack adjuster kit with metal parts that fits KitchenAid, Whirlpool and Kenmore racks alike, and it is a part we usually have on the truck.
- 3
Dishwasher shuts down partway through the cycle
A KitchenAid dishwasher in Fairfax's Merrifield area was doing exactly this: halfway through a wash it would shut itself down. When one does that, wet dishes and water left sitting in the sump usually follow. The usual suspects are the door latch switch, the heating element and the control board, and we test them in that order rather than starting with the board.
- 4
Dishes come out wet, even on heated dry
The drying side of the machine is a heating element in the tub floor with a limit switch, plus a vent door and fan on models with Advanced ProDry. Any of them can fail, and so can the board that drives them. Before we replace anything we check that the rinse-aid dispenser is actually dispensing, because plastic never dries well without it.
- 5
Fridge side warm while the freezer stays cold
On a French door or side-by-side this means cold air is not moving from the freezer into the fridge. The evaporator fan motor may have stopped, the damper that meters air into the fridge may be stuck, or the evaporator coil is buried in frost because the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the board that runs the defrost cycle has failed.
- 6
Ice maker in the door quits, or makes small hollow cubes
When the ice maker lives in the fridge door it depends on cold air ducted from the freezer and a good seal around the ice compartment. Frost in that compartment, a weak water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a clogged water filter all show up as slow ice, small cubes or none at all. Small, hollow, misshapen cubes usually mean too little water is reaching the mold. The ice maker assembly itself is the last thing we replace, not the first.
- 7
Gas oven will not heat but the burners light
The oven has its own hot-surface igniter. As it ages it still glows, but not hot enough to open the gas valve, so nothing lights. That was the call on a KitchenAid gas range in the Langley area of McLean: the oven simply would not heat. The other two we see on these ranges are burners that spark nonstop, usually a wet or cracked spark electrode, and oven temperature that drifts, which points at the temperature sensor.
- 8
Glass cooktop cracked, or touch controls stop responding
A cracked glass top is replaced as a top, not patched, and on many models the glass comes as one piece with its frame. The touch controls on the electric and induction cooktops fail in their own way: the pad stops responding, a zone will not detect a pan, or the cooktop shuts itself off. That is a control board or a touch panel, and on induction units we check the wiring and the cooling fan under the glass before ordering either.

FAQ
KitchenAid repair: frequently asked questions
Do you repair KitchenAid stand mixers or blenders?
No. We do not work on countertop appliances from any brand. We repair KitchenAid dishwashers, refrigerators, ice makers, ranges, wall ovens, cooktops and microwaves, in homes, offices and rentals. For a mixer, KitchenAid's own support line for countertop appliances is the right call.
Is FixDaddy an authorized KitchenAid service company?
No. We are independent and not affiliated with KitchenAid or Whirlpool Corporation. If your appliance is still inside KitchenAid's own warranty, call KitchenAid first so you do not pay for a repair they would cover. Once it is out of warranty, we repair it with parts ordered by model number and back the work with our own 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.
What does it cost to have a KitchenAid looked at?
Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair. We never quote a repair price over the phone, because on a KitchenAid the same symptom can be a seal or a control board. Someone answers the phone 24/7, and most days we can come the same day.
My KitchenAid dishwasher only leaks sometimes. Is that the door gasket?
Usually not. A leak that shows up as a small puddle at the front, and only on some cycles, is most often the diverter shaft seal under the tub, which weeps when the diverter turns. A door gasket leak wets the door edge every time. Our technician checks the sump from underneath before touching the gasket.
Can you repair a 48-inch built-in KitchenAid refrigerator without pulling it out?
In most cases, yes. Most of what fails, the fans, boards, gaskets and the ice maker, is reached from the front or through the top grille, so the unit stays in the cabinetry. If a job would need the unit out, the technician tells you before starting, not after.
How long does a KitchenAid part take to get?
Common KitchenAid parts share Whirlpool part numbers and we carry the usual ones on the truck, so many repairs finish on the first visit. When a part has to be ordered, such as a control board, a glass cooktop or anything for a built-in refrigerator, the technician orders it by model number and returns to fit it.
KitchenAid acting up?
Someone answers now. The visit is $89, credited to the repair, and most days we are out the same day.
