Know your Whirlpool

Cabrio top-load washers and dryers
Cabrio is Whirlpool's name for its high-efficiency, low-water top-load washers and the dryers sold beside them. Most have no center agitator, a lid that locks for the whole cycle, and a tub hung on four suspension rods. When a Cabrio bangs in spin, will not spin, or stops with the lid locked, the rods, the lid lock and the shift actuator are the first three things we check.
Duet front-load washers and dryers
Duet is the front-load line, sold as Duet, Duet Sport and Duet Steam. A wide rubber door boot between the door and the drum, a drain pump behind a small panel at the bottom, and a drum that turns on bearings. Water on the floor usually means the boot. A cycle that ends with a drum full of water usually means the pump, or something caught in it.
Vertical modular top-loaders
Whirlpool's own service literature calls its current top-load platform the vertical modular washer. A belt drives the basket, and a small electric part called the shift actuator moves the machine between wash and spin. When the actuator fails, the washer agitates but never spins, or stops and shows a code. It is a small part and a common fix on these.
2 in 1 washers with a removable agitator, and Load & Go
Whirlpool's newer top-loaders let you lift the agitator out and run the basket as an impeller washer. Some also carry a Load & Go tank that holds detergent and doses each load itself. Both add things that can go wrong: the dispenser needs cleaning or it stops dosing, and a worn basket drive hub shows up as a basket that turns freely by hand but will not get up to speed in spin.
Refrigerators: top-freezer, side-by-side and French door
Whirlpool sells all three layouts, and most share the same modular ice maker and the same defrost setup: a heater under the evaporator coil, a defrost thermostat clipped to the coil, and a control board that decides when to run them. That is why the classic Whirlpool complaint is a freezer that is fine while the fresh-food side goes warm.
Ranges, wall ovens and cooktops
Freestanding gas and electric ranges, wall ovens and glass cooktops, many with the AccuBake name on the oven. Gas ovens light with a hot-surface igniter that weakens with age. Electric cooktops use radiant elements under the glass, and when one burns open there is nothing to see from the top; the burner is simply dead.
Laundry centers, compact and heat-pump laundry, dishwashers, microwaves
Whirlpool also builds the stacked laundry center, the all-in-one washer-dryer, compact front-load washers, heat-pump and HybridCare dryers, dishwashers and over-the-range microwaves, plus the coin-op washers and dryers in building laundry rooms. We repair all of them.

Top-load washer will not spin, or stops with the lid locked
On the vertical modular washers the shift actuator moves the drive between agitate and spin. When it fails, the tub fills and agitates, then sits there with wet clothes, and the lid lock may refuse to let go. The lid lock itself is the other suspect: if the machine cannot confirm the lid is locked, it will not spin at all. Both are quick repairs.

Hard banging in spin
Whirlpool top-loaders hang the tub on four suspension rods. When the rods wear, the tub swings into the cabinet on spin and the whole machine walks. That is exactly what our technician found on a Whirlpool washer in Tysons that banged hard every time it went into spin: worn suspension rods. They are replaced as a set.

Front-load washer leaking at the door
The Duet door boot is a wide rubber bellows between the door and the drum. Objects left in pockets and plain age split it, and once it splits, every fill puts water on the floor. That is what our technician found on a Whirlpool Duet washer in Falls Church: a torn door boot gasket, water on the floor with every wash cycle. A new boot goes in from the front.

Dryer runs but makes no heat
Whirlpool dryers carry a thermal fuse on the blower housing that opens for good when the exhaust gets too hot, nearly always because the vent is packed with lint. On electric models the heating element, the thermal cutoff and the thermostats sit together in the heater can. On gas models the gas valve coils weaken with age and drop out partway through a cycle, so the dryer heats for a few minutes and then goes cold. We replace the fuse and fix the reason it blew, or it will blow again.

Freezer frosts over while the fridge side goes warm
On a Whirlpool fridge the fresh-food side borrows cold air from the freezer through a fan and a damper. When the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the control board that runs the defrost cycle fails, the evaporator coil packs solid with frost, air stops moving, and the freezer stays cold while the top warms up; our Whirlpool refrigerator repair page goes through it part by part.

Ice maker stops making ice
Whirlpool's ice maker is a modular unit that can be swapped as one piece, but it is often not the guilty part. The freezer has to be below about 10 degrees before it will cycle, the water filter has to be clear, and the water inlet valve at the back of the fridge has to open. A fill tube frozen solid is another common one.

Dishwasher leaves standing water
Whirlpool dishwashers use a separate small drain pump under the tub. When it fails, or a chip of glass jams its impeller, the tub never empties and the next cycle starts on dirty water. A kinked drain hose, or a new garbage disposer with its knockout plug still in place, can look exactly the same, so we rule those out first.

Oven will not heat, or takes forever
On Whirlpool gas ovens the igniter has to glow hot before the gas valve opens. As it ages it still glows but never gets hot enough, so the oven clicks, does not light, or heats slowly. Electric ovens lose the bake element, which usually shows a blister or a burnt spot. Both are quick swaps.

The company also builds Maytag, JennAir, Amana and KitchenAid appliances, so one part number often fits all of them, and the everyday parts (thermal fuses, dryer belts and drum rollers, lid locks, shift actuators, suspension rods, drain pumps, oven igniters, defrost heaters, water inlet valves, ice makers) are widely stocked. We carry the common Whirlpool parts on the truck. Door boots, bearings, control boards and cooktop elements are specific to the model, so those are ordered after the visit and the technician comes back to fit them.

Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore: often the same machine

Whirlpool Corporation also builds Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana, and it has built appliances for Sears under the Kenmore name. So a Maytag top-load washer and a Whirlpool one are often the same machine under the paint, with the same parts and the same fixes. Many Kenmore washers and dryers are Whirlpool builds with a different logo.

For you that means two things. If you have a Kenmore or Maytag that is really a Whirlpool, everything on this page applies to it. And when a part is needed, it is rarely a hard one to find.

Before you call about a Whirlpool

If the washer or dryer showed a code, write it down before you unplug the machine. Whirlpool codes usually start with an F and point to a system, not a part, and our guide to Whirlpool washer error codes lists the common ones; we still test the part, but the code saves time. Find the model number too. On most Whirlpool machines it is usually on a sticker inside the door or under the lid, or on the back, and it tells us which version of the part to bring.

If a top-loader has stopped with the lid locked and wet clothes inside, leave it plugged in and leave the lid alone. Forcing the lid breaks the lock, and that turns one repair into two.

Whirlpool repair: frequently asked questions

Is FixDaddy an authorized Whirlpool service center?

No. We are an independent repair company and we have no connection to Whirlpool Corporation. If your machine is still inside Whirlpool's own warranty period, that warranty work has to go through Whirlpool. Once it is out of that warranty, we repair it, and our own repair carries a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.

My Whirlpool washer is showing an F code. What does it mean?

An F code points to a system the washer is unhappy with, such as draining, the door lock or the motor, rather than to a single part. Note the code and stop the cycle. Our technician reads the stored codes in diagnostic mode, then tests the parts in that system before replacing anything. Do not clear the codes by unplugging the machine over and over; that erases the history that helps us.

Do you carry Whirlpool parts on the truck?

The common ones, yes: thermal fuses, belts, lid locks, actuators, igniters, drain pumps and the like. Whirlpool parts are widely stocked and shared with Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana, which helps. Door boots, bearings, control boards and cooktop elements depend on the exact model, so those are ordered and the technician comes back to fit them.

My machine says Kenmore or Maytag. Can you still fix it as a Whirlpool?

Yes. Whirlpool owns Maytag and has built Kenmore appliances for Sears, so a lot of those machines are Whirlpool designs with a different badge. Our technician confirms it from the model number and uses the same parts and the same procedure.

My Whirlpool dryer runs but the clothes come out cold. Is it the vent or the dryer?

Often both. A lint-packed vent makes the dryer overheat, and the thermal fuse opens to protect it. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it opens again in a few weeks. On a gas Whirlpool the other usual cause is the gas valve coils dropping out mid-cycle. We check the vent, the fuse and the heat source on the same visit.
