Sub-Zero lines we see most

Know your Sub-Zero

  • Classic Series (formerly Built-In)

The full-size Sub-Zero most people picture: a stainless or panel-ready cabinet with the louvered grille across the top, in side-by-side, over-and-under, French door and column layouts. The condenser and the compressors sit behind that flip-up grille. Earlier units of this shape were sold as the 500 series and the 600 series, and Sub-Zero still publishes their specification sheets.

  • Designer Series (formerly Integrated)

Panel-ready columns, over-and-under units, refrigerator drawers and undercounter pieces with a hidden hinge, so the door sits flush with the cabinet fronts. Current model numbers start with DEC, DET or DEU. The earlier flush line was the 700 series. Because the machine disappears into the cabinetry, finding the model plate and reaching the works takes more care than on a Classic.

  • PRO Series

Stainless steel inside and out, in a 36-inch size (PRO3650) and a 48-inch size (PRO4850), each with a solid or glass door. It runs the same dual refrigeration as the rest of the line. The earlier version was sold as the PRO 48. These are very heavy and are always serviced in place.

  • Undercounter, ice makers and wine storage

Beverage centers, refrigerator drawers, 15-inch ice makers (the current Designer undercounter ice maker and the older 315I and UC-15IP models) and wine storage, from the current Designer wine units back to the 400 series wine cabinets. Small cabinets with the same sealed systems, and Sub-Zero has its own condenser-cleaning routine for them.

  • Wolf ranges and rangetops

Dual fuel ranges (gas top, electric convection oven) from 30 to 60 inches, all-gas ranges, and sealed-burner rangetops with griddle, charbroiler or wok-burner options. Current gas tops use dual-stacked sealed burners; older Wolf ranges and rangetops were built with open burners, and Wolf keeps separate guides and parts for each.

  • Wolf ovens, cooktops and ventilation

M Series and E Series built-in convection ovens in Contemporary, Transitional and Professional styles, the earlier L Series ovens, convection steam ovens, speed ovens, drawer and drop-down-door microwaves, gas and induction cooktops, the older module cooktops, and Wolf cooktop hoods and downdrafts.

  • Cove dishwashers

Sub-Zero Group's dishwasher brand. All are 24-inch panel-ready models, including an ADA-height version and versions with a built-in water softener. They use a four-stage filter you pull out and rinse, and fan-assisted drying.

What fails

What actually breaks on Sub-Zero appliances

  1. 1

Fridge side warm, freezer still cold

Sub-Zero's Dual Refrigeration design gives the refrigerator and the freezer their own cooling systems, so one side can quit while the other keeps working. When the fresh-food section drifts warm, the first suspect is the evaporator fan for that side: with no fan turning, nothing moves cold air into the compartment. On one Sub-Zero repair in McLean the freezer side was holding temperature while the fresh-food side kept warming, and our technician found exactly that, a failed evaporator fan. If the fan runs, the defrost parts and then that side's compressor are next.

  2. 2

Service light on, or the unit runs hot and long

The control lights the service indicator when it detects a temperature or ice-maker problem, or when the condenser needs cleaning. Sub-Zero says to clean the condenser every 6 to 12 months; on a Classic it sits behind the flip-up grille at the top, and its fins are sharp. Dust and pet hair in those fins make the compressors run longer and, in time, cause temperature loss or a mechanical failure. On a call for appliance repair in Great Falls, a Sub-Zero that had stopped cooling came down to one of the usual three: a dusty condenser, a stalled fan or a failed compressor.

  3. 3

Compressor failed or the sealed system lost refrigerant

When a compressor stops, that side stops making cold even though the lights and fans still run. A refrigerant leak looks similar from the kitchen: the unit runs without stopping and never gets cold. Either one is sealed-system work, a different job from swapping a fan, and it needs its own tools.

  4. 4

Ice maker quit, hollow cubes or slow water

Sub-Zero's own guide ties hollow cubes to a dirty condenser, and small cubes or slow water to a filter past its 12 months. Beyond those two, the ice maker in a built-in stops for the same reasons as any other: a fill valve that sticks, a fill tube frozen solid, or the ice maker assembly itself. The water filter and the air purification cartridge each have their own indicator on the panel, so check those before assuming the worst.

  5. 5

Frost, ice or water where it should not be

Water pooling under the crisper drawers, frost on the back wall or ice building in the freezer usually starts with room air getting in: a door left ajar, a door that no longer closes square, or a gasket with a rip in it. On a panel-ready unit a thick custom panel can pull the door out of line over the years. If the doors and gaskets check out, the defrost system is next on the list, and the drain pan behind the kickplate gets a look too.

  6. 6

Wolf burner clicks and clicks but will not light

On a Wolf gas top the igniter is meant to click until the burner lights, then stop. Nonstop clicking, a weak flame or no flame most often traces to a burner cap sitting crooked or not fastened tight, or to a wet igniter after a boilover; Wolf's own guide says to let it dry out fully. If it still clicks with everything clean, dry and seated, the igniter or the spark module that drives it is failing. On the charbroiler, continual clicking can simply mean the knob is not turned all the way to HI.

  7. 7

Wolf oven not heating, or a code on the knob display

A dual fuel range and the M Series and E Series wall ovens heat with electric elements run by an electronic control board, with two Dual VertiFlow fans moving the hot air. No heat with a working display points at an element or the board; an unfamiliar code on the oven control knob means the control has logged a fault, and Wolf says that is a service call. All-gas ranges use a gas oven with its own igniter, which can weaken over the years until the bake burner will not light.

  8. 8

A heavy panel-ready door that sags or drifts open

Sub-Zero hinges are built to pull the door shut and hold it sealed. Add a thick custom cabinet panel and the hinge and closer hardware carry far more weight than a plain stainless door. Over time the door can sag, sit proud of its neighbour or drift open, which lets warm air in and sets off the door-ajar chime after 60 seconds. Adjusting or replacing the hinge and closer parts fixes it; the panel itself usually stays where it is.

FAQ

Sub-Zero repair: frequently asked questions

Are you authorized by Sub-Zero or Wolf?

No. FixDaddy is an independent repair company with no affiliation with Sub-Zero Group. We repair Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove appliances, order the parts for them, and stand behind the work with our own 90-day parts-and-labor warranty. If your unit is still inside the maker's own warranty, it is worth calling them first.

The service light on my Sub-Zero came on. What should I do?

Turn the unit off at the panel, flip up the top grille and look at the condenser. If it is packed with dust, brush and vacuum it in the direction of the fins, turn the unit back on and see if the light clears; Sub-Zero recommends that cleaning every 6 to 12 months anyway. If the light stays on or is flashing, the control has found a temperature or ice-maker problem. Call us: the $89 visit covers the diagnosis, and it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

The freezer works but the refrigerator side is warm. Is that a big repair?

Not necessarily. Dual Refrigeration gives each side its own system, so one side warming does not mean the whole unit is failing. Often it is that side's evaporator fan or a defrost problem; sometimes it is that side's compressor. We do not guess at the price over the phone. The technician finds the cause at your home and gives you the full repair price before touching anything.

Do you still work on the old 500, 600 and 700 series?

Yes. Sub-Zero still publishes specification sheets for those series, which is how we identify the right part; whether a part is still available depends on the model, and the technician checks before quoting. The failures on older units are the same ones as on new ones: condenser, fans, ice maker, gaskets and, eventually, the compressor. Every repair on them carries the same 90-day warranty.

My Wolf burner keeps clicking after it lights. Can I fix that myself?

Try the simple things first. Lift the burner cap off and seat it back square; make sure the igniter and the cap are dry after any boilover, and give them a day if they got soaked; on the charbroiler, check that the knob is turned all the way to HI. If it still clicks with everything clean, dry and seated, the igniter or the spark module needs replacing, and that is a service call.

Do you repair Wolf ovens and Cove dishwashers too?

Yes. Sub-Zero Group makes all three brands, so Wolf oven and range repair is part of the same work: our technicians handle Wolf ranges, rangetops, cooktops, M Series and E Series ovens and ventilation, and Cove 24-inch dishwashers. Someone answers the phone 24/7, and same-day service is available most days across Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland.
