Whirlpool-built Maytag (nearly every machine in service)
Unless yours is close to twenty years old or older, it is a Whirlpool design built in Whirlpool's plants, with Whirlpool parts inside. Model numbers start with M: MVW top-load washers, MHW front-loaders, MED and MGD dryers, MDB dishwashers.
Bravos and Bravos XL top-loaders
The high-efficiency top-load line, most with a big drum and a low wash plate instead of an agitator. What we replace most on them: lid locks, drain pumps blocked by socks and coins, worn suspension rods that let the tub bang the cabinet, and the shift actuator that moves the drive between wash and spin.
Centennial washers and dryers
Maytag's mid-price top-loaders and matching dryers, most of the washers with an agitator. Later Centennial and Bravos XL machines carry the Commercial Technology (MCT) badge. The washers share their drive with the Bravos, so the same lid lock and shift actuator jobs apply. On the dryers it is belts, idler pulleys and the thermal fuse that blows when the vent is choked.
Maxima front-loaders and today's MHW models
Maytag's front-load line. Big drums, a door lock, and a drain pump with a coin trap behind the lower front panel. The trap fills with hair, coins and bra wires; the door lock wears; and on older ones the drum bearings start to rumble on spin, which is a big job, so you get the full price at your home before anything is touched.
Pet Pro and Commercial Technology (MCT) machines
The current top-loaders. Pet Pro washers have a removable pet-hair filter in the agitator that Maytag says to empty between loads; a full filter is the first check when hair is left on clothes. MCT machines are sold with Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty on a few key parts, such as the washer's drive motor and wash basket. It is parts only and runs through Maytag, not through us.
Neptune and other pre-Whirlpool Maytag
Machines from before the Whirlpool era: Neptune front-loaders, Atlantis and Performa top-loaders, Dependable Care washers and dryers, and the Legacy Series, which were rebadged Amanas. The Neptune had a fire-safety recall and years of mold complaints. All are now close to twenty years old or older and some parts are discontinued, so once you have the full repair price, saying no is fine.

What actually breaks on Maytag appliances

Top-loader washes, then sits full of water and never spins
This is the classic Maytag call. On one washer repair in Arlington, a Maytag top-loader washed the load, then never advanced to spin, and the lid lock never caught. Maytag's own checklist covers the easy causes: an unbalanced or tightly packed load, a kinked drain hose, a machine that is not level, a power blip during the cycle. When those are fine, it is usually the lid lock refusing to latch, the shift actuator no longer moving the drive into spin, or a drain pump blocked by a sock, because the control will not spin with water still in the tub.

Top-loader bangs the cabinet and walks on spin
Bravos and Centennial tubs hang from four suspension rods. When the rods wear, the tub swings into the cabinet on every spin and the washer may shut down as off-balance even with a small load. Maytag says to check leveling and load balance first; if a balanced load still bangs, the rods are the fix, and they are replaced as a set of four.

Front-loader stops mid-cycle with the door locked and water inside
On Maxima and MHW front-loaders the machine will not unlock with water in the drum, so a drain problem shows up as a locked door. First suspect is the coin trap on the drain pump, behind the lower front panel. After that the door lock itself, which also stops the cycle from starting at all. Maytag's help page says to clear anything blocking the lock, clean soap build-up from the door area and cut power for five minutes; if the door still will not lock or release, the part has failed.

Dryer runs but the drum does not turn
A Washington DC Maytag dryer came to us with the motor running and nothing tumbling: the belt had snapped. These dryers usually warn you first with a squeal during the cycle, which is the idler pulley or the belt starting to go. The belt, the idler pulley and the two drum support rollers are the usual set; when one is worn the others are rarely far behind, so they get checked while the drum is out.

Dryer runs with no heat, or the Check Vent light comes on
On a Maytag electric dryer a blown thermal fuse is the most common no-heat cause, and it blows because a lint-choked vent let the dryer overheat. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means the new one goes the same way. Gas models add the igniter and the gas valve coils to the list. Newer Maytag dryers show an AF code or a Check Vent message when airflow is restricted. Maytag's help pages also explain that auto-dry times adjust up and down by load, so one long cycle is not a fault, but every load taking longer than it used to is.

Gas range burner clicks and clicks but never lights
The spark is there but no flame. Most often the burner cap is wet or sitting crooked after cleaning, or the igniter electrode is soaked, cracked or crusted. If every burner clicks even with the knobs off, the spark module is the fault. On Maytag electric ranges the version of this call is one burner that stays cold: a dead surface element or a bad burner switch, and on glass-top models the radiant element under the glass or the control board.

Dishwasher lights blink, will not start, or quits partway through
On Maytag dishwashers the control board and the touch panel are the two electronic parts that fail, and a board that has lost a relay will stop the cycle, skip the heat or refuse to start. A weak door latch does the same because the control will not run with the door reading open. Water left in the bottom points instead at the filter, the drain hose or the drain pump. A dishwasher that washes but never dries usually needs the heating element or the board that drives it.

Fridge warm up top while the freezer stays cold, or the ice maker quits
On Maytag French-door and side-by-side models the cold is made in the freezer and pushed to the fridge section by the evaporator fan. A fan that has stopped, or a defrost system that let the coil ice over, leaves the fridge warm while the freezer is fine; the defrost thermistor, heater and control are the usual parts. Ice makers on these are a module that is replaced as a unit, and a water inlet valve that no longer opens fully gives small or hollow cubes first.

Parts

Because a Maytag is a Whirlpool underneath, its parts are Whirlpool parts and they are easy to get. Lid locks, shift actuators, dryer belts, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, igniters, drain pumps and surface elements for the common models ride on the truck. Control boards, door locks and drum bearings for a specific model are ordered and the technician returns to fit them.

The exception is the pre-Whirlpool Maytag: Neptune, Dependable Care and Performa parts are thinning out and some are discontinued, and if yours is one of them, that is part of the plain-English answer you get at the visit. The model tag is under the lid rim on a top-loader, inside the door on a dryer, on the door edge of a dishwasher and on the inside wall of a fridge; a photo of it before you call helps.

What is different about fixing a Maytag

Two things. First, the badge says Maytag but the machine underneath is a Whirlpool design. Today's Maytag is built alongside Whirlpool's own machines and comes apart the same way, so most of what we say about Whirlpool appliance repair applies to it too; for a Maytag dryer, our Whirlpool dryer repair page is the closest match.

Second, the warranty. Maytag sells many of its current washers, dryers and dishwashers with a 10-year limited parts warranty on a handful of parts, such as a washer's drive motor and wash basket. It is a parts program run by Maytag; labor is not included, and FixDaddy, being independent, cannot claim it for you. Worth checking before you call

Maytag's own help pages list the simple causes first, and they are worth two minutes. A top-loader that will not spin: is the load packed tight or lopsided, is the drain hose kinked, is the machine level, and did the power blink during the cycle. A top-loader that leaves clothes wet: too much detergent, or a detergent that is not HE, makes suds that slow the spin.

A front-loader whose door will not lock: clear anything in the way of the latch, wipe the soap build-up off the door area, and cut the power for five minutes. A Pet Pro washer leaving hair on clothes: pull the filter out of the agitator and empty it, which Maytag says to do between every load.

Is a Maytag today just a Whirlpool with a different badge?

Mostly, yes. Whirlpool owns Maytag and the two brands come out of the same plants, so they share parts and come apart the same way. That is not a bad thing for you: parts are easy to get and the common failures are well known. A Maytag from before the Whirlpool years, now close to twenty years old or older, is a different machine with its own parts, and those parts are getting harder to find.

My washer has Maytag's 10-year parts warranty. Can FixDaddy handle that?

Open the lid if it lets you and spread the load out; a lopsided or packed load stops these machines from spinning. Check the drain hose behind the washer for a kink. If the water is still there after a Rinse and Spin, it is the drain pump, the lid lock or the shift actuator, and the technician can tell which at the visit.

Do you carry Maytag parts on the truck?
