Know your Thermador

Professional ranges: Pro Harmony and Pro Grand
Pro Harmony is the standard-depth range that sits flush with the counter run; Pro Grand is the deeper commercial-depth one. Both come in 30, 36, 48 and 60 inch widths, in gas, dual fuel or induction. The gas tops use Star Burners with an ExtraLow simmer burner, and the gas ovens light with an igniter that has to glow hot before the gas valve opens, which is the part that wears out.
Masterpiece Collection
The sleeker design line: single, double and triple wall ovens, steam and speed ovens, ovens with a left or right side-opening door, gas and induction cooktops, dishwashers and hoods. Masterpiece gas cooktops carry the same Star Burner and ExtraLow burners as the Professional line, so the ignition parts are the same story.
Freedom refrigeration columns
Freedom is Thermador's built-in refrigeration: separate refrigerator and freezer columns, bottom-freezer units, wine columns and under-counter units, most of them panel-ready so they disappear into the cabinetry. A column that runs warm, frosts up or drips is usually a defrost or fan problem, and reaching it means pulling the unit forward out of its cabinet.
Star Sapphire, Sapphire and Emerald dishwashers
Thermador's three dishwasher tiers, from Star Sapphire at the top down to Emerald. They are built by BSH, the same company that builds Bosch dishwashers, so the layout underneath is familiar: a drain pump under the filter in the tub floor, a circulation pump and heater beneath the tub, and a control module inside the door.
Induction cooktops: Freedom, Liberty and Heritage
Three tiers of induction cooktop, plus the induction Pro Harmony ranges. Induction faults are almost always electronic: the power board under the glass, a coil sensor or the touch control, not the glass itself. The original 36-inch Freedom Induction Cooktop, model CIT36XWBB, is listed on Thermador's own site as no longer available, so parts for it are ordered rather than carried on the truck.
Ventilation
Wall hoods, wall chimney hoods, island hoods, custom insert hoods, drawer slide-out hoods and downdrafts, with the blower either inside the hood or mounted remotely. Hood calls are usually a blower motor, a speed control or the lights, and on a downdraft the lift mechanism that raises it out of the counter.

What fails

What actually breaks on Thermador appliances

A Star Burner clicks but will not light
Star Burners light from a spark electrode beside the burner head. Boil-overs and cleaning water get into the electrode and it clicks without lighting, or the ceramic insulator cracks and the spark goes to the wrong place. If every burner on the top clicks at once and none lights, the spark module that feeds all of them is the suspect. Both are parts, not a reason to replace the range.

Flames uneven, yellow or lifting off the burner
The star-shaped burner head has flame ports all the way around its points, and they clog with boil-over residue one point at a time. A burner cap that is not sitting flat does the same thing. On a range converted between natural gas and propane, the wrong orifice gives a lazy yellow flame or one that lifts off the ports. Cleaning the ports and reseating the cap comes before any part.

The ExtraLow burner goes out or keeps clicking on simmer
ExtraLow is Thermador's low-simmer burner setting, and it runs a much smaller flame than a normal low. That is where a weak spark electrode or a tired spark module shows up first: the flame goes out and does not come back, or the burner clicks the whole time it is on. The cause is usually the electrode or the module rather than the valve.

The oven in a Pro range will not heat, or takes far too long
On the all-gas Pro Harmony and Pro Grand, the oven igniter has to glow hot enough before the gas valve will open. As it ages it glows orange but never reaches that point, so the oven stays cold, or it takes far longer than it should to come to temperature. On dual-fuel ranges the electric oven usually comes down to a bake element, the temperature sensor or the relay board that switches them.

A Freedom refrigerator column runs warm while the freezer is fine
A Thermador refrigerator in Merrifield was running warm in the fresh food section; our technician found the defrost system had failed and frost had built up thick enough to block airflow across the evaporator, so the cold could not reach the food. That is the classic pattern on these columns: a defrost heater or defrost sensor stops working, ice grows over the evaporator, and the fan has nothing to push. Thawing it out only buys a few weeks; the failed part has to be replaced.

Wall oven door will not close flat, or the door and handle get hot
Thermador wall oven doors are heavy, and the hinges wear until the door sits proud of the frame. Heat leaks past the gasket, the oven runs longer to hold temperature, and the handle gets hot. Side-opening doors have their own hinge set. Replacing hinges or a gasket on a built-in oven means the oven comes out: on one oven repair in Alexandria, a Thermador wall oven had to lie on moving blankets on the kitchen floor, because there is almost no way to reach the back of one while it sits in the wall.

Dishwasher will not drain, will not dry, or stops with a code on the display
The Star Sapphire, Sapphire and Emerald share the BSH dishwasher layout. Not draining is the drain pump under the filter or something jammed in it, and the display usually shows a code for it. Not drying comes down to the rinse aid dispenser or the heater. Stopping mid-cycle with a code is the circulation pump, water that has leaked into the base pan and tripped the float, or the control module in the door. The code names an area, not a part, so it gets confirmed with a test.

Induction cooktop dead, or one zone will not heat
Induction faults are electronic. A whole side dead is usually the power board for that side; one zone that will not recognise a pan is the coil or its sensor; a top that will not switch on at all is the touch control or the power feeding it. The glass rarely fails unless something cracked it. On the original Freedom Induction Cooktop, which is no longer sold, boards are ordered, not carried.

Parts

Thermador belongs to BSH, which also owns Bosch and Gaggenau. Parts for current Masterpiece, Professional, Freedom and Sapphire products are stocked BSH parts, and a good number are the same part used in Bosch appliance repair.

The model number on a Thermador is called the E-Nr and is printed on the rating label; parts are ordered against it. Common parts ride on the truck. Boards, hinges and most refrigeration parts are ordered, and the technician comes back to fit them.

Units from before the BSH years, and discontinued models like the first Freedom Induction Cooktop, are where a part can turn out to be unavailable. That is settled at the visit, before any repair is priced.

Shoe covers and floor protection go down first, and that matters more than usual with Thermador: a Freedom column, or a wall oven in for Thermador oven repair, has to come out of its cabinetry to be worked on, and it is going to sit on your floor for a while. You hear what is wrong in plain English before anything is touched.

Common parts are on the truck. Boards, hinges and most refrigeration parts are ordered against your E-Nr, and the technician comes back to fit them. Payment is on completion, and the invoice comes by email or text.

Thermador quirks worth knowing before you call

A few things on a Thermador are design, not damage. The Star Burner caps have to sit dead flat on the burner heads after cleaning, or the flame comes out uneven on one side; lift and reseat them before you call for gas cooktop repair. The ExtraLow burner is built for very low simmering, so on its lowest setting it will not look like the others.

Freedom columns are built into the cabinetry, so a custom door panel that has dropped a little rubs its neighbour and stops the door sealing; that is a hinge adjustment, not a new door. Many current Thermador ranges, ovens and dishwashers connect to the Home Connect app; if the appliance keeps dropping off Wi-Fi but cooks and washes fine, that is an app and router matter, not a repair.

If the appliance shows a code on its display, write it down. Thermador codes point at an area, and the technician confirms the part with a test rather than reading the code alone.

My Thermador burner clicks but will not light. What is wrong?

Almost always the spark electrode beside that burner: it is wet from a boil-over or a cleaning, or its ceramic has cracked. Dry it out and reseat the burner cap first. If every burner clicks and none lights, it is the spark module that feeds them. Both are quick to test, and both are parts, not a new range.

Why is the fresh food side of my Freedom column warm when the freezer is cold?

That is usually the defrost system. A defrost heater or sensor fails, ice grows over the evaporator, and the fan cannot move cold air into the fresh food section. Thawing the unit clears it for a couple of weeks, then it comes back, until the failed part is replaced.
