What we fix here

Appliance repair in Washington, DC, by appliance

  • Refrigerator repair in Washington, DC

Rowhouse kitchens are tight, so the refrigerator is often counter-depth or a built-in set into the cabinetry. A Sub-Zero refrigerator in Washington DC had lost its cooling to a refrigerant leak; our technician found the leak and recharged the system. The other regular call is an ice maker that stops filling.

  • Washer repair in Washington, DC

DC washers live in basements, upstairs closets and stacked pairs in English basement apartments. A washer that fills slowly, or sits waiting at the start of a cycle, usually has a clogged or failed water inlet valve, and old supply pipes feed grit into that valve. In an upstairs closet, a drip from a hose ends up in the ceiling below.

  • Dryer repair in Washington, DC

With neighbors on both sides, a rowhouse dryer vents through the front, the back or the roof, and long runs clog. Some owners skip the vent and run a condenser dryer. Clothes were coming out of a Bosch 300 Series dryer in Georgetown still damp; on these, lint collects in the condenser fins, so that is the first place to look.

  • Dishwasher repair in Washington, DC

Narrow galley kitchens in rowhouses and English basements often hold an 18-inch compact dishwasher, boxed in tight. A full cycle that leaves dishes wet or gritty is often scale on the heating element and in the spray arms before it is a failed part. White residue inside the tub in summer is the same hard water, not a fault.

  • Oven and stove repair in Washington, DC

A rowhouse range is usually freestanding, wedged between cabinets, or a wall oven in a renovated kitchen; English basements and older apartments have 20- and 24-inch ranges. A gas oven that takes forever to heat, or will not light while the top burners work, usually has a tired igniter. On electric it is the bake element or the sensor.

Why FixDaddy

Why Washington, DC calls FixDaddy

$89 visit. Full price before any work. Credited if you go ahead.

  • You hear what is wrong before anything is touched

Our technician arrives in uniform, explains the fault in plain English before touching the machine, and gives you the full repair price there in your home. Nobody pushes you to say yes.

  • A call when we are 15 minutes out

You get a two-hour arrival window and a call about 15 minutes before the technician reaches your block. On a rowhouse street, finding the parking space is our problem, not yours.

  • Floor protection on the stairs, not only in the kitchen

A machine coming out of an English basement closet travels down a narrow hallway and up the steps. The technician wears shoe covers and lays floor protection along that whole path.

  • Insured, in houses and apartment buildings alike

FixDaddy is insured and Google Guaranteed, and we work in mid-rise apartment buildings and condos as well as rowhouses. Each repair is backed for 90 days, parts and labor.

Washington, DC homes

What we see in Washington, DC kitchens and laundry rooms

Washington is a rowhouse city. A rowhouse shares its side walls with the neighbors, so a dryer vent can only leave through the front, the back or the roof, on a long run full of elbows. The kitchen sits at the back, often a galley with a counter-depth refrigerator and an 18-inch dishwasher. Many houses have an English basement apartment with a stacked or all-in-one washer-dryer in a closet, often ventless. Apartment buildings here are mid-rise, and their rules shape a repair visit.

Rowhouse appliance repair: Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights, Petworth

In a DC rowhouse the kitchen is at the back, often in a later bump-out, and the laundry is in the basement or in a closet added upstairs with a pop-up. These houses have been renovated more than once, so what you own is a modern machine squeezed into an old opening: a counter-depth refrigerator because a full-depth one blocks the walkway, a range wedged between cabinets, a stacked washer and dryer on an upper floor. A dryer in the middle of the house pushes air through a long run of elbows, and lint settles in each one. The first sign is a normal load that needs two cycles. Upstairs, a washer leak is a ceiling problem too.

English basement and apartment building repairs

An English basement kitchen is small: an apartment-size refrigerator, a 20-inch or 24-inch range, and a laundry closet with no straight path to the outside, which is why so many hold a ventless dryer. Parts for those narrow ranges are usually ordered, and the technician returns to fit them. In the mid-rise buildings along 16th Street and Connecticut Avenue, and the newer ones in NoMa, Navy Yard, the Southwest Waterfront, Shaw and Brookland, the building sets the rules: a shared water shut-off the front desk has to arrange, a freight elevator to book, a loading dock with a time limit. Mention those rules when you book.

Dishwasher, ice maker and washer problems caused by DC water

DC's tap water is moderately hard, and hardest in the warm months, when spotting on glassware and white residue inside the dishwasher show up. Over time scale coats the dishwasher's heating element, narrows the spray-arm holes and fouls the float that tells the machine it is full. In a refrigerator it builds on the fill valve, so the ice maker goes dry while the rest of the fridge works; our ice maker repair page has the other causes. In a washer it lands on the inlet-valve screens, and in the oldest houses grit from the supply pipes catches there too, so a washer that fills slowly may only need its screens cleared.

Very professional service. Quick to respond to request and came when they said. Though I didn't have them fix my issue (I realized I should probably just buy a new dryer as there were some unknowns) there was no hard sell of any extra service.

FAQ

Appliance repair in Washington, DC: frequently asked questions

Do you cover all of Washington, DC, or just Northwest?

All eight wards, from Georgetown and Chevy Chase DC to Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Brookland and Anacostia east of the river. It is the same visit and the same warranty in every ward, and jobs from the District are among the recent appliance repairs we post with photos. Just over the line, see appliance repair in Arlington or appliance repair in Bethesda.

What does a visit cost in DC?

An $89 visit fee, on every call. It pays for the technician to find the fault and give you the full repair price in your home. Approve the repair and the $89 is credited toward it. We do not quote repair prices over the phone, because the price depends on what the technician finds.

My rowhouse dryer has no vent. Can you work on a ventless dryer?

Yes. Rowhouses and English basements often have no easy path for a vent through a shared wall, which is why condenser and heat-pump dryers turn up here. When one leaves clothes damp, lint packed into the condenser fins is the usual cause, then the condensate pump and the heater.

I live in an apartment building. What do you need from the building?

Tell us whether the building has a shared water shut-off, a freight elevator to book or a loading dock with time limits, and the visit is planned around it. We work in mid-rise apartment buildings and condos across DC as well as in houses.

Is DC tap water hard enough to hurt my appliances?

DC Water calls it moderately hard, and it peaks in summer. That is enough to scale a dishwasher's heating element and an ice maker's fill valve over a few years. It does not ruin an appliance. It does mean that a dishwasher or an ice maker acting up here often has a water-side fault, not a failed control board.

Can you come the same day?

Most days, yes. Call at any hour; a person answers 24/7. Same-day appliance repair is not a promise on every call, but it is the normal case.

What if the repair needs a part you do not have on the truck?

Common parts ride on the truck. Anything else, including parts for 20-inch apartment ranges and built-in refrigerators, is ordered, and the technician comes back to fit it. Either way, parts and labor on the repair are under warranty for 90 days.
