LG Appliance Repair in Northern Virginia, DC & Maryland

LG builds its own linear compressor, its own direct-drive washer motor and the one-body WashTower, and each of those fails in its own way. Our LG appliance repair covers washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and microwaves in homes across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what is wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home, and if you go ahead the $89 counts toward the repair.

FixDaddy is an independent repair company. We are not part of LG, not authorized by LG and not sent by LG; we fix LG appliances because local homes are full of them and we know how they break.

LG lines we see most

Know your LG

  • Front-load washers with the Direct Drive motor

LG mounts the motor straight onto the back of the drum, with no belt between them. Fewer moving parts, which LG is right about, but it also means a drum that will not turn is a motor, sensor, bearing or drain problem, never a belt. Newer models call it Inverter Direct Drive and add 6Motion and TurboWash cycles on top.

  • WashTower and WashCombo

The WashTower is one body, not a washer with a dryer stacked on top: washer below, dryer above, controls in the middle, and one control system running both halves. The WashCombo is a single ventless drum that washes and dries with an inverter heat pump on a 120-volt plug. Both are built for a laundry closet where a side-by-side pair will not fit.

  • InstaView Door-in-Door and Craft Ice refrigerators

French door and side-by-side models with a glass panel that lights up when you knock twice on it, a door within the door for drinks and snacks, and on Craft Ice models a second ice maker that drops round ice, three or six pieces a day. That is a lot of wiring, a water line and a cold-air duct running through a door, and a good share of the faults on these live in that door.

  • LG SIGNATURE and LG STUDIO

LG's two upper lines. SIGNATURE is the top tier, covering refrigerators, cooking, dishwashers and laundry. STUDIO is the design line for kitchen remodels, with matching finishes across the fridge, range, wall oven and dishwasher. The panels cost more; the machinery behind them is LG's, and the faults below apply to them too.

  • QuadWash and TrueSteam dishwashers

All 24 inches wide, top-control or front-control, with four spray arms instead of two, a steam option on the upper models, an inverter direct-drive wash motor and LG's LoDecibel quiet rating. When one stops draining or halts on a leak fault, the work is down in the sump under the lower rack.

  • ProBake Convection ranges, wall ovens and cooktops

Gas and electric ranges, single and double wall ovens, and electric and induction cooktops. ProBake puts the main heating element at the back of the oven behind a two-speed fan instead of underneath, and newer ranges add InstaView glass and an air-fry mode. Uneven bakes and slow preheats on these come back to that rear element, its fan or the temperature sensor.

What fails

What actually breaks on LG appliances

  1. 1

Refrigerator stops cooling while the compressor hums or runs

Many LG refrigerators use LG's own linear compressor, and LG settled a class action covering French door and side-by-side models built from 2014 through 2017 after owners reported the fridge going warm a few months to a few years in. Some Kenmore refrigerators carry the same compressor. A linear compressor can seize its piston or break a suspension spring while the motor windings still test fine. But a warm LG is not always the compressor: a fan, a sensor or a sealed-system leak gives the same symptom.

  2. 2

Front-load washer will not spin, or stops with water in the drum

On an LG front-load washer this is a short list. The drain pump is blocked at the coin trap or has failed, so the water never leaves and the machine refuses to spin; LG shows that as OE. The drum fails to turn, which LG shows as LE; if the load is not too heavy and nothing is jammed in the tub, that points at the motor's position sensor or the motor itself. Or the door lock never catches, which is dE. The code says where the machine gave up, not why.

  3. 3

Dryer runs but clothes come out damp, with d80, d90 or d95 on the display

LG dryers watch their own airflow and show d80, d90 or d95 when the path between the dryer and the outside wall is restricted. Sometimes that is the vent run through the wall. Or it is inside the machine: the blower wheel behind the base panel packed solid with lint, so the dryer heats but moves no air. A dryer that runs with no heat at all is usually the heating element on electric models or the gas valve coils on gas models, with a thermistor as the next suspect; LG shows a thermistor fault as tE1.

  4. 4

Ice maker in the door stops, or Craft Ice stops dropping

LG puts the ice maker in the refrigerator door on most French door models, fed by a water line and a cold-air duct that run through the door. The fill line freezes, the ice maker's own motor gives up, or the duct loses its seal and the ice compartment warms. On Craft Ice models the round-ice maker is a second unit with its own fill, so one can quit while the other keeps going. The water valve and the filter housing can be behind it too, because a starved ice maker looks the same as a dead one.

  5. 5

Frost on the back wall of the fridge, fresh-food side warm, freezer fine

Behind that back panel sit the evaporator coil, its fan and a defrost heater. When the defrost cycle stops running, ice grows over the coil, the fan has nothing to blow through, and the fresh-food side warms while the freezer stays cold. The usual causes are the defrost sensor, the heater itself or the board that switches them, and sometimes the fan has simply seized in the ice. The cure is the failed part, not a hair dryer on the panel; the frost comes back in a week otherwise.

  6. 6

Dishwasher will not drain, or stops on a leak fault

LG dishwashers pump out through a drain pump in the sump under the lower rack. When it clogs with a shard of glass or a fruit sticker the cycle stops with water in the bottom, and the filter above it, which lifts out by hand, is the first thing to check. A leak fault means the sensor in the base has found water, and on these the usual leak points are the sump seal and the door gasket. Wash arms that have stopped turning usually mean a blocked filter or a weak wash motor.

  7. 7

Oven bakes unevenly or takes a long time to preheat

On a ProBake range the convection heat comes from the element at the back of the oven with a fan in front of it. If that element or its fan fails, the oven may still warm up but the convection modes bake unevenly and preheat drags. If the oven never reaches temperature at all, the temperature sensor and the relay board are the next checks. On gas ranges an oven that takes minutes to light, or never lights, is usually the igniter, which weakens with age before it fails outright.

  8. 8

Washer walks in spin and quits on an unbalanced-load fault

LG shows UE when the load is uneven in the drum, and with one heavy bath mat that is all it is. When a machine that used to be fine walks on every load, something under it has changed: a leveling foot has backed off, the shock absorbers have gone soft, or the drum bearing has started to fail, which you also hear as a roar in spin. A bearing on an LG front-loader means most of the machine comes apart, so it is worth knowing before you decide.

FAQ

LG repair: frequently asked questions

You are not LG. Can you still fix my LG appliance?

Yes. FixDaddy is an independent repair company, not affiliated with or authorized by LG. LG sells its parts openly through an authorized distributor, so an independent shop can fit them, and every repair we do carries our own 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.

My LG fridge stopped cooling. Is it the compressor?

Maybe. The linear compressor is the famous LG failure, but a fridge that went warm can also be a stuck defrost, an evaporator fan or a sensor. Our technician tests the compressor for what it is doing, not just whether it hums, and tells you which it is before anything is ordered. If it is the compressor, you get the full repair price at your home and decide from there.

What does LE mean on my LG washer?

LG says LE means the drum failed to turn. LG's own advice is to check for a coin or something jammed in the tub, unplug the washer for five minutes and try a smaller load. If it comes back on a normal load, the motor's position sensor or the motor is the usual cause, and that is a test the technician does at your home.

Can you repair an LG WashTower, or does it have to go back to LG?

We repair WashTowers in place. It is one body with a washer below and a dryer above, and they share a single control system, so the technician looks at both halves even when only one is acting up. Our visit fee is $89; the technician finds exactly what is wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home, and if you go ahead the $89 counts toward the repair.

Do you keep LG parts on the truck?

The common ones, yes: drain pumps, door locks, thermistors, heating elements, sensors and ice makers. Bigger or rarer parts such as a linear compressor or a control board are ordered after you have approved the repair, and the technician returns to fit them. LG parts are not hard to get; LG's authorized distributor stocks them.

Why does my LG dryer show d80, d90 or d95?

Those are LG's airflow codes: the dryer has measured that the path from the drum to the outside wall is restricted, and the higher the number, the worse the blockage. It can be the vent through the wall, but on an LG dryer the blower wheel inside the machine can be packed just as solid, and that is what the technician opens up to check. A dryer running against a blocked vent is a fire risk, so stop using it until it is opened up.

Is an older LG refrigerator worth repairing?

We cannot say from the phone, and we do not quote repair prices before the visit. Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what is wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home, with no pressure; if you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair. Some faults on an older LG fridge are small parts, and some are the compressor. You decide with the real number in front of you.
