What actually breaks on Insignia appliances

Washer won't drain, or stops with water in the tub
The drain pump is the usual cause. A sock, a coin or a hair tie slips past the drum and jams it, or the pump motor wears out and hums without moving any water. A drain hose that got bent flat when the washer was pushed back stops the water just the same. Other causes are on our washer repair page.

Washer won't spin, or stops partway through
A washer will not spin until its switch says the lid or door is shut and locked. When that lock or switch fails, the machine fills and washes, then quits before the spin, often with an error on the display. One heavy, lopsided item, like a wet blanket, can stop the spin too.

Washer bangs hard or walks across the floor
Start with the feet: a washer that isn't level rocks on every spin. If it is level and still bangs with a normal load, the parts that hold the tub steady are worn, suspension rods on a top-loader and shock absorbers on a front-loader. It is worth fixing early, because a tub that slams around wears out everything near it.

Fridge side warm, freezer still cold
When the fresh-food side warms up but the freezer stays cold, the fan that blows freezer air into the fridge has usually stopped, or the cooling coil behind the freezer wall has iced over because the defrost system quit. Ice maker stopped making ice
On the French door models that give ice in the door, start with the water: a kinked supply line or a clogged water filter slows the fill. After that it is usually the water inlet valve, an ice plug in the fill tube, or the ice maker itself, and all three are part of our ice maker repair.

Freezer running but not cold enough
On a convertible upright, check which mode the panel shows first: in fridge mode it holds fridge temperatures on purpose. Past that, look for a torn or twisted door seal, a failed start relay on the compressor, or, on a frost-free upright, a coil packed with frost. Most chest freezers are defrosted by hand, and a thick layer of ice on the walls cuts the cooling too. See freezer repair for more.

Dishwasher leaves water in the bottom
Most of the time food scraps have clogged the filter at the bottom of the tub, or the drain hose is kinked or blocked. When both are clear, the drain pump has failed. Water left standing also leaves grit on the dishes, so a cleaning complaint and a draining one are often the same fault. Our dishwasher repair page covers the rest.
