Dryer Making a Squeaking Noise? Here's the Fix
3 min read By FixDaddy DMV Techs Reviewed for accuracy

A dryer that squeaks, squeals, or thumps is hard to ignore --- and it usually signals a mechanical component that's starting to fail. The good news is that most dryer noises have a specific cause that's identifiable and fixable. Here's how to diagnose what you're hearing.
Squeaking or Squealing
Worn Drum Support Rollers
Drum support rollers are small wheels that support the rear (and sometimes front) of the drum as it spins. When the rubber wears down or the roller axle seizes, you get a rhythmic squeaking or squealing that often gets worse as the dryer warms up.
Rollers are inexpensive ($20--$40 for a full set) and replacing them is one of the most common dryer repairs. Most technicians replace all rollers at once since they wear at similar rates.
Worn Drum Glides or Slides
Front-loading dryers typically have plastic or felt glides that support the front lip of the drum. When these wear down, the metal drum contacts the front bulkhead --- producing a scraping or squealing sound.
You can inspect front glides by removing the front panel of the dryer. Worn glides are flat or shiny where they should have a raised, smooth surface. Replacement sets are inexpensive and straightforward to install.
Idler Pulley Wear
The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt. When its bearing wears out, it produces a high-pitched squealing or chirping sound --- often continuous rather than rhythmic. This is one of the most common noise sources in dryers over 5 years old.
The idler pulley is accessible once the drum is out and is a standard replacement part for most major brands.
Thumping or Banging
Flat Spot on Drum Rollers
If the dryer sits unused for an extended period (like after moving), the rubber drum rollers can develop flat spots. This causes a periodic thump with each rotation. In most cases this resolves itself after 15--20 minutes of operation as the rubber rewarms and reshapes.
If thumping persists after a full cycle, the rollers have worn permanently and need replacement.
Items in the Drum
Before assuming a mechanical problem, check the drum for loose items --- a single sneaker, a buckle on a bag strap, or a forgotten set of keys all create a loud banging. Always check pockets before loading.
Grinding Sound
A grinding or metallic scraping sound usually means something has fallen behind the drum --- a coin, underwire, or small clip caught between the drum and the back housing. Turn the dryer off immediately and inspect before running another cycle. Continued operation with a metal object lodged in the drum can scratch the drum surface and damage seals.
Belt Replacement: When It's Time
The drive belt wraps around the drum and idler pulley to spin the drum. When it breaks, the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn. When it starts slipping or fraying, you may hear a slapping sound. Belt replacement is one of the most common and affordable dryer repairs --- the belt itself costs $10--$20 and replacement takes about an hour.
