How Long Does a Dryer Last? Signs It's Time to Replace
3 min read By FixDaddy DMV Techs Reviewed for accuracy

Dryers are built to work hard for many years. But every appliance has a lifespan, and knowing when yours is approaching the end --- versus when a repair makes sense --- saves you money and prevents the inconvenience of a sudden failure. Here's what you need to know.
Average Dryer Lifespan
Most dryers last between 10 and 13 years, with an average of about 12 years. Gas and electric dryers have similar lifespans. Compact dryers and ventless dryers may have shorter lifespans due to their more intensive operating cycles.
- Electric dryers: 10--13 years average
- Gas dryers: 11--13 years average
- Compact / ventless dryers: 8--11 years
Signs Your Dryer Is Nearing the End
Takes Multiple Cycles to Dry a Load
If your dryer consistently needs two full cycles to dry a normal load --- even after the vent has been cleaned and the lint screen is clear --- the heating system is losing efficiency. This is one of the most reliable early signs of a dryer nearing the end of its useful life.
Frequent Repairs
Any single repair on an older dryer may be justifiable. But if you're calling for service every year, the repair costs are compounding. A useful rule of thumb: if the annual repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a new dryer, replacement is the better investment.
Unusual Noises That Keep Coming Back
Drum rollers, idler pulleys, and bearings all wear out. On a newer machine, replacing these parts is absolutely worth doing. On a machine over 10 years old, you're replacing one worn component while others approach the same failure point.
Drum Is Damaged
Chips, cracks, or rough spots in the drum coating can snag and damage clothing. Drum replacement is expensive --- often not cost-effective on older machines.
It Runs Hot to the Touch
A dryer that's excessively hot on the outside, especially after a vent cleaning, may have a heating system that's no longer regulating temperature properly. Combined with age, this suggests the end of reliable operation.
Repair vs. Replace: The Decision Framework
Use this framework when a repair quote comes in:
- Dryer under 5 years old: repair almost always makes sense unless the repair exceeds 70% of replacement cost
- Dryer 5--10 years old: repair if cost is under 50% of a new comparable dryer
- Dryer over 10 years old: repair only simple, inexpensive issues (thermal fuse, belt, drum rollers). Major repairs like motor or control board are rarely cost-effective
What to Look for in a Replacement
- ENERGY STAR certification for lower operating costs
- Moisture sensor --- stops the cycle when clothes are dry instead of running a timed cycle
- Matching your washer brand for stacking compatibility if needed
- Drum capacity to match your washer --- a dryer should be roughly 2x the capacity of your washer by cubic feet
