Samsung Refrigerator Error Codes Explained

Samsung refrigerators use a built-in diagnostic system to alert you when something isn't working correctly. These error codes appear on the digital display and give you --- and your technician --- a head start on diagnosing the problem. Here's what the most common Samsung refrigerator error codes mean and how to respond.

How Samsung Error Codes Work

Error codes typically appear automatically on the display panel. On some models, you can access a diagnostic mode by pressing and holding specific buttons (check your manual). When a code appears, the first step is always a power reset --- unplug the fridge for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If the code clears and doesn't return, it was likely a temporary fault.

Common Samsung Refrigerator Error Codes

1E / SE --- Sensor Error

A temperature sensor is reporting an abnormal reading or has failed. Depending on the location (fresh food, freezer, or defrost sensor), this can affect cooling in one or both compartments.

2E --- Freezer Sensor Error

The freezer compartment temperature sensor has failed. The fridge may still cool partially, but it won't regulate the freezer temperature accurately, potentially causing freezing issues or inadequate cooling.

8E --- Ice Maker Sensor Error

The ice maker's internal temperature sensor is faulty. This will typically cause ice production to stop or become erratic. The sensor or the ice maker assembly may need replacement.

21E --- Freezer Fan Error

The evaporator fan motor in the freezer section is not operating correctly. This is one of the more common Samsung error codes and usually results in poor cooling throughout the entire refrigerator.

Fix: Check for ice buildup around the fan --- this is a very common cause on Samsung models. If ice is blocking the fan, a full manual defrost (turn off the fridge for 24--48 hours) often resolves it. If the fan motor itself has failed, replacement is necessary.

22E --- Refrigerator Fan Error

Similar to 21E but for the refrigerator section fan. The fresh food compartment won't cool adequately without this fan running.

40E / 41E --- Ice Room Fan Error

Found on French door models with in-door ice makers, these codes indicate a problem with the ice compartment fan. The ice maker may stop working and ice storage temperature may rise.

84C --- Communication Error

The main control board and another component (often the display or sub-board) have lost communication. A power reset sometimes resolves this. If not, wiring and control boards need to be inspected.

PC ER --- Panel Communication Error

The control panel is not communicating properly with the main board. This can affect all display functions and temperature controls.

Samsung Ice Maker Issues: Special Note

Samsung has had well-documented issues with ice maker failures, particularly on French door models manufactured between 2014 and 2020. If you're experiencing ice maker problems, check if your specific model is part of a class action settlement or extended warranty program --- Samsung has offered free repairs on certain affected models.

When to Call for Service

Fan motor errors (21E, 22E) and defrost issues can sometimes be resolved with a manual defrost, but they often recur if the underlying cause isn't fixed. Sensor and control board issues generally require a professional diagnosis to ensure the right component is replaced.
