Washing Machine Not Draining? Here's What to Do

A washing machine that won't drain leaves you with a drum full of water and soaking wet laundry. It's one of the most common washer problems --- and most of the time the cause is something you can identify yourself. Here are the most likely culprits and how to address each one.

1. Perform a Reset First

Before anything else, try a simple power reset. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet, wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in. On some electronic models this clears a control board glitch that was preventing the drain cycle from completing. If the washer drains after a reset, run a short cycle to confirm it's working before doing a full load.

2. Check for a Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose

The drain hose runs from the back of your washer to a standpipe or laundry tub. If it's kinked, pinched by the machine being pushed too close to the wall, or clogged with lint and debris, water can't exit.

Pull the washer away from the wall and inspect the full length of the hose. Straighten any kinks. Disconnect the hose from the standpipe and check for blockages --- a flashlight and a straightened wire hanger can help dislodge clogs near the opening.

3. Clean the Pump Filter

Front-load washers almost always have an accessible pump filter --- usually behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. This filter catches coins, buttons, lint, and other debris before they reach the pump. A clogged filter is one of the top causes of drain failure on front-loaders.

How to clean it: place a shallow pan and some towels under the filter panel. Open the panel, unscrew the filter cap slowly (water will flow out), and remove any debris. Rinse the filter under running water and reinstall it. Do this every 3--6 months as routine maintenance.

4. Inspect the Lid Switch or Door Latch

Top-loading washers are designed to stop mid-cycle if the lid isn't fully closed --- this is a safety feature. The lid switch is what tells the machine the lid is closed. When it fails, the washer acts as if the lid is always open and won't spin or drain.

Test the switch by pressing it manually with the machine running. If you don't hear a click or the washer doesn't respond, the switch may need replacement. For front-loaders, a faulty door latch can cause the same issue --- the machine won't drain if it thinks the door is open.

5. Check the Drain Pump

The drain pump is what actually forces water out of the drum. If it's clogged with a small piece of clothing or a foreign object, or if the pump motor has burned out, you'll get standing water after every cycle.

Signs of a failing pump include a humming noise with no water movement, or complete silence where you'd normally hear water draining. Pump clogs are DIY-fixable with some disassembly, but a burned-out pump motor requires replacement --- a job typically best left to a technician.

6. Too Much Detergent

Excessive suds from too much detergent (especially non-HE detergent in an HE machine) can interfere with the drain cycle. The washer's sensors detect suds and may pause or extend the cycle to reduce them. You might notice the machine running extra rinse cycles or stopping with water still inside.

Fix: use only HE detergent in HE washers and use the recommended amount --- usually much less than you think. Run a cleaning cycle to clear any residue buildup.

When to Call a Professional

If you've checked the hose, cleaned the filter, tested the lid switch, and confirmed it's not a suds issue --- and the washer still won't drain --- the problem is likely a failed drain pump, control board, or wiring issue. These require professional diagnosis and repair.
