LG Washer Error Codes Explained

LG washing machines are equipped with a smart diagnostic system that displays error codes when something isn't right. Instead of just stopping mid-cycle with no explanation, your LG washer tells you exactly what it detected. Here's what the most common LG washer error codes mean and how to respond.

How to Use LG SmartDiagnosis

Many LG washers support SmartDiagnosis --- a feature that lets you transmit error data to LG's support line or the LG ThinQ app for remote diagnosis. To use it, open the LG ThinQ app, select your washer, and tap SmartDiagnosis. Hold your phone near the washer's SmartDiagnosis logo while the washer runs the tone sequence. The app will identify the problem.

Common LG Washer Error Codes

OE --- Drain Error

The washer cannot drain water within the expected time. This is one of the most common LG error codes. Check the drain hose for kinks, blockages, or improper height. Clean the pump filter (located at the bottom front of the machine). Confirm the drain hose is not inserted more than 6 inches into the standpipe.

IE --- Inlet Error (Water Supply)

The washer didn't fill with water within the expected time. Check that both water supply valves are fully open. Inspect the inlet hoses for kinks. Check the mesh screens inside the inlet valve connections for mineral buildup --- these can be cleaned with a small brush.

UE --- Unbalanced Load

The load is unbalanced and the washer can't safely spin at high speed. Open the machine, redistribute the clothes evenly, and restart. For single heavy items, add a few similar-weight items to balance the load.

LE --- Motor Locked Error

The motor is overloaded or locked. This can happen with an overstuffed drum or a foreign object jamming the drum. Remove some items, check for obstructions, and restart. If LE persists with a normal load, the motor or its wiring may need professional inspection.

PE --- Water Level Sensor Error

The pressure sensor that monitors water level has a fault. The hose connecting the sensor to the tub may be blocked, kinked, or disconnected. If the hose is clear, the sensor itself may need replacement.

FE --- Overfill Error

The tub has filled beyond the normal level. This is almost always caused by a faulty water inlet valve that isn't closing properly. The valve needs replacement --- leaving the machine in this state risks flooding.

tE --- Thermistor Error

The water temperature sensor (thermistor) has a fault. This affects wash cycles that rely on precise temperature control. The thermistor typically needs replacement.

CE --- Current Error

The motor is drawing an abnormal amount of current. This can indicate a motor fault, a wiring problem, or a foreign object caught in the drum. Inspect the drum for obstructions first; if clear, have a technician test the motor.

dE1 / dE2 --- Door Error

The door is not properly closed or the door lock mechanism has a fault. Check that nothing is caught in the door seal, then close and firmly latch the door. If the code persists, the door latch or lock assembly may need replacement.

CL --- Child Lock Active

This is not an error --- it means the child lock feature is active. To deactivate it, consult your manual for the specific button combination (usually holding the Child Lock button for 3 seconds).
