GE range hood repair
With GE the hood is usually the vent side of a GE, Profile or Café over-the-range microwave. A fan that starts by itself while you cook is a built-in thermostat doing its job; it will not switch off until the unit cools. Real faults are a fan that runs over a cold cooktop (the thermostat stuck closed), a dead vent motor, or a damper stuck shut with grease.

Whirlpool makes wall and under-cabinet hoods and over-the-range microwaves. KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir come from the same company, so the same fan motors, dampers and boards turn up across all four. On recirculating installs the charcoal filter cannot be washed and lasts about six months; a saturated one is why the hood seems to have lost its pull.

KitchenAid makes wall-mount canopy hoods and retractable downdrafts. On the downdraft the part that fails is usually the lift: a safety switch behind the grease filter that blocks the lift when the filter is not pushed home, a lift motor that hums but will not raise the vent, or a spill that ran down inside the unit.

On Samsung over-the-range microwaves the vent motor and the damper sit on top of the cabinet, so any repair on the fan side means lifting the microwave off its mounting plate. Set up to recirculate, they use a charcoal filter that is replaced, never washed. A fan gone weak or loud is usually grease on the blower wheel or a stuck damper.

LG over-the-range microwaves with ExtendaVent have a vent panel that slides forward over the front burners. That extra moving panel is one more thing for grease to jam. The fan side fails like any other: the vent motor, the damper, or a saturated charcoal filter on a recirculating install.

Bosch makes chimney hoods, insert liners and 800 Series telescopic downdrafts, which rise from behind the cooktop with a blower mounted below or remotely. Downdraft faults are the lift, its switch, and a blower reached through the cabinet below. A chimney hood that lights up but will not run the fan has lost the fan output on its control board, or the motor.

Thermador pro-style wall and island hoods sit over 36- and 48-inch rangetops, often with an in-line or remote blower, so the box in the kitchen holds only baffle filters, lamps and the control. What owners notice is lights that work while the fan will not start: the control board has lost its fan output, or the remote blower has failed.

Viking pro hoods come with internal, in-line or roof-mounted blowers. When the blower is on the roof or in the attic, the hood in the kitchen is mostly filters, lights and controls, so when nothing moves air the fault is either the control in the hood or the blower at the far end of the duct. The baffle filters wash in the dishwasher.

Miele wall and island hoods with Con@ctivity link to a Miele cooktop, so the fan starts and picks its own speed. When a Miele fan seems to have a mind of its own, it is often that link, not the motor. Miele hood parts are not the common ones carried on the truck, so expect an order and a return visit.

Sub-Zero does not make hoods; its sister brand Wolf does: pro wall hoods, island hoods, liners and downdrafts over Wolf ranges. They use heavy baffle filters and strong blowers that are often remote, in the duct or on the roof. When the lights work and no air moves, it is the control or the remote blower. A Wolf downdraft that will not rise is a lift fault.

What happens when the technician comes
Most hood repairs are done in place, with the filters out and the bottom panel off, so the main thing is room to work: take the pots off the range below and let it cool. A switch, a capacitor, a lamp socket or a damper is usually under an hour.
An over-the-range microwave has its vent motor and damper on top, so for those it comes off its wall plate. Empty the cabinet above it, where the mounting bolts are, and clear some counter to set it down. For a downdraft, empty the cabinet under the cooktop; the lift and the blower are in there. If your blower is in the attic or on the roof, say so when you call.
We give you a 2-hour arrival window and phone about 15 minutes before. Once the fault is found you get the full repair price, and work starts only if you say yes.
What waiting costs you
Grease that should have landed in the filter lands on the cabinets instead, and it does not wipe off next month the way it would have washed out of a filter this week. Steam that is not carried out soaks into the cabinet above the range and swells the doors. Over gas burners the hood also carries off what the flames give off; without the fan that stays in the room. A motor straining against clogged filters overheats until it fails. On an over-the-range microwave the vent fan keeps the cooktop's heat off the electronics: run it fanless all winter and a vent repair becomes a microwave repair.

Repair or replace
Repair your range hood, or replace it?
Repair it when
- The fault is one part: a capacitor, a switch, a damper, a lamp socket, a thermostat or a motor. There is little else in a hood to fail next.
- It is a pro-style hood from Viking, Wolf or Thermador. They are built to be serviced, and blowers, filters and boards stay available.
- It is an over-the-range microwave and only the vent side failed: the motor, the damper, the thermostat or the filters.
- It is a downdraft built into the counter, where a new unit has to match the cutout and the duct below.
Replace it when
- It is a budget under-cabinet hood whose motor or control board is no longer made.
- It is an over-the-range microwave and the oven side has failed as well as the vent.
- The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new hood.
- The housing is rusted through, or so caked with grease inside that a new motor would not last.
A motor can be replaced, but a crushed, overlong or missing duct cannot be fixed from inside the hood. If the duct is the real problem, you hear that at the visit, before you spend anything on parts.
Which kind of hood you have changes the repair
A wall, under-cabinet, chimney or island hood keeps everything in one body: motor, blower wheel, switches or touch panel, lamps and filters. An over-the-range microwave is a microwave with a blower on top, so a vent repair starts with the unit coming off its wall plate; the oven half is over-the-range microwave repair. A downdraft rises out of the counter behind the cooktop on a lift motor, with the blower below in the cabinet: two motors that can fail, plus a safety switch behind the filter. Pro-style hoods often keep the blower in the attic, in the duct or on the roof, not in the hood itself.
Ducted or recirculating: how to tell, and what it changes
Look above the hood. A duct going up into the cabinet or out through the wall means it is ducted: air leaves the house past a damper, a flap that stops outside air blowing back in. No duct means it recirculates through a charcoal filter and blows back into the kitchen, which is how many condos and kitchens without an outside wall are set up. On a ducted hood, weak pull is usually the damper or the duct. On a recirculating one it is nearly always the charcoal filter. We can replace a motor, but we cannot make a crushed or overlong duct breathe.
Filters: the maintenance that prevents most fan calls
Mesh grease filters, the aluminum ones in most hoods and over-the-range microwaves, go in the sink or the dishwasher. Baffle filters, the steel ridges in pro hoods, wash the same way. Wash them before they look bad: a clogged filter makes the motor overheat and trip its cut-out, and a motor that trips often does not last. Charcoal filters exist only on recirculating installs, cannot be washed and last up to six months. Grease that gets past the filters ends up on the blower wheel and causes the roar. Range Hood repair: frequently asked questions
Can you fix the vent fan on my over-the-range microwave without replacing the microwave?
Yes. The vent motor, the damper, the thermostat and the charcoal filter are separate parts sitting on top of the oven, and each can be replaced on its own. The technician lifts the microwave off its wall plate to reach them. If the oven side has also failed, you hear that before you decide anything.
My microwave's fan turns on by itself while I cook. Is it broken?
Usually not. Over-the-range microwaves have a thermostat that starts the vent fan when the area around the control panel gets hot, on GE units at about 150 degrees Fahrenheit, and it will not let you switch it off until the unit cools. If the fan runs when the cooktop is cold, that thermostat has failed and we replace it.
How much does a hood repair cost?
Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair. We do not quote repair prices over the phone because a dead fan can be a capacitor or a motor, and only the visit tells which.
Is the repair covered if the fan quits again?
Every repair has a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty. If the part we fitted or the work we did fails inside that window, we come back and put it right. If another part looks close to going, the technician tells you at the visit so it is not a surprise later.
Do you repair downdraft vents that will not rise?
Yes, the retractable downdrafts from JennAir, KitchenAid and Bosch included. The usual causes are a grease filter not pushed fully in, which trips the safety switch that blocks the lift, a lift motor that hums but cannot raise the vent, or a spill that ran inside. If the downdraft is built into the cooktop itself, that is covered under downdraft cooktop repair.
The fan runs but the smoke does not clear. Is it the fan or the filters?
Start with the filters, because they are the usual answer. Wash the mesh or baffle filters, and if the hood recirculates, replace the charcoal filter, which cannot be washed. If airflow is still weak, the damper may be stuck shut with grease or the duct may be crushed, too long or blocked. Black soot on the filters over gas burners points at the flames, not the hood: a yellow flame is gas stove repair.
Can you make my recirculating hood vent outside?
If a duct to the outside already exists behind or above the hood, yes: the blower is turned to face it, the charcoal filter comes out and a damper goes in. If there is no duct, someone has to run one through the wall or roof first, and it has to end outdoors, not in the attic. Once the duct is there, we connect the hood to it.
