- The bake element, the heating loop on the oven floor, has burned through; look for a blister or a break
- Half the power is missing: one side of the double breaker tripped, so the clock runs but nothing heats
- The thermal fuse, a one-time overheat cut-out, has blown. Common right after self-clean
- A control board relay, the switch that feeds the element, no longer closes

Gas oven igniter glows, but there is no flame, or the oven goes cold mid-bake

- A weak igniter: it still glows orange but is too worn to open the gas valve
- The oven safety valve, which lets gas through once the igniter is hot, has failed shut
- The gas shut-off behind the oven is partly closed, or the supply is interrupted
- A loose or burned wire at the igniter

Slow preheat
Most probably
- One element is out. Bake and broil both run during preheat, so losing one slows it badly
- On a gas oven, an aging igniter that takes longer and longer to light the burner
- A 208-volt supply instead of 240, normal in many condo buildings. Slower, but not a fault
- A temperature sensor reading low, so the oven heats past the point where it should say ready

Uneven bake: one side burns or the bottom stays pale
Most probably
- The bake element is out, so all the heat comes from the broil element above: dark tops, pale bottoms
- The convection fan has stopped, so hot air is not moved around the food
- The door is not sealing: a worn gasket, a sprung hinge, or a wall oven sitting crooked in its cutout
- A drifting temperature sensor, so the oven swings hotter and cooler than it should

Temperature is off: food takes longer or burns at the set temperature

- The temperature sensor, the thin probe at the back of the oven, has drifted and reads wrong
- The calibration setting was changed; most ovens adjust up or down by as much as 35 degrees
- Convection mode is on and the recipe was written for regular bake, so food cooks faster
- Less often, the control board misreads a good sensor

Door will not close, sags, or the inner glass has broken
Most probably
- The hinges: their springs stretch or snap, and the door drops or will not pull shut
- Worn hinge receivers, the slots in the oven frame that the hinges lock into
- A torn or hardened door gasket, the woven seal around the opening
- Inner glass cracked by a knock or by wiping the door while hot. Leave the oven off until it is replaced

Controls locked, display blank, or buttons do not respond
Most probably
- Often not a fault: control lock (hold the lock key about three seconds) or Sabbath mode is on
- A power blip froze the control; switching the breaker off for a minute clears it
- A touch keypad with a dead or stuck key, so the oven ignores you or beeps by itself
- If the display stays blank, the display board or the main control board has failed

Oven trips the breaker on preheat
Most probably
- A bake or broil element with a cracked outer skin, shorting to the oven body as it heats up
- A wire burned through where it joins an element, now touching metal
- Moisture inside an element after a spill or a long spell unused
- Less often, a worn-out breaker. Either way, stop resetting it and leave the oven off

Self-clean ended and the door will not unlock, or nothing has worked since
Most probably
- The door lock motor or latch has seized in the locked position. Do not pry the door
- The thermal fuse blew from the heat, and the oven will not heat again until it is replaced
- The heat damaged the control board or one of its relays
- An element gave out during the cycle, the hottest thing an oven ever does

GE oven repair
GE, Profile, Café and Monogram ovens often hide the bake element under the oven floor. When it fails there is nothing to see, only a slow preheat and a pale bottom crust. On GE gas ovens the glow igniter weakens first. On older wall ovens, a keypad that beeps by itself or ignores your touch is usually the touch panel or the control board behind it.

A Whirlpool oven most often dies right after a self-clean: the heat blows the thermal fuse or seizes the door lock, and the oven will not heat or will not open. In daily use it is the bake element on electric models and the glow igniter on gas ones. Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir ovens are built by the same company and share most of these parts.

On KitchenAid built-in ovens the touch panel is a common fault: keys stop answering or the display fades while the oven is sound. A self-clean can also blow the thermal fuse behind the cavity, and the oven stays dead until it is slid out of the cabinet to reach it. In a KitchenAid gas range, an oven that will not light is most probably the igniter.

Samsung range ovens have two well-known faults. A temperature sensor that reads wrong makes the oven stop short of the set temperature. A failing control board or touch panel throws a code, beeps and locks you out. On Samsung's microwave-and-oven wall units it is usually the microwave half, the magnetron or its inverter, that goes first.

The Miele wall oven faults we are called for: a breaker that trips on preheat, usually a heating element shorting as it warms; a display that goes blank; and heat that drops out partway through a bake. A Miele steam oven adds water and steam parts that need descaling to keep working. Miele parts are model-specific and are ordered, not carried.

Thermador wall ovens are heavy built-ins with the cooling fan, relay board and wiring behind the cavity. What owners notice: a cooling fan that turns loud or stops, an oven that shuts itself off as it overheats, or a display that goes dark. In a Thermador Pro range, the gas oven's glow igniter is the usual reason the oven will not light.

Bosch wall ovens come from the same maker as Thermador. The usual faults are a control board whose relays stop switching the elements, so the display works but nothing heats; a cooling fan that goes quiet; and door hinges that let the door hang open a crack. The fan protects the electronics, so if it has stopped, leave the oven off until it is fixed.

In a Viking Professional range the oven's glow igniter is the part that goes most, leaving one oven cold while the burners, or the second oven, work fine. The heavy doors wear their hinges until the door sags and leaks heat. What happens when the technician comes
Most oven repairs, such as an element, an igniter, a sensor or a door hinge, are usually done in about an hour, and those parts are normally on the truck. A control board or door glass is ordered for your exact model, and the technician returns to fit it.
Before the visit, let the oven cool, take out the racks and anything stored inside, and clear the floor in front of it. Elements, hinges and gaskets are fitted from the front. Reaching the fan, wiring or board of a wall oven can mean sliding it out of the cabinet onto blankets; you are told first.
Same-day visits are possible most days. You get a 2-hour window and a call about 15 minutes ahead. The technician explains the fault in plain English and gives you the full price before any work starts.
What waiting costs you
A weak gas igniter only gets weaker: slow preheats first, then an oven that drops out mid-roast, then no flame at all. A cooling fan that has stopped lets heat reach the control board, and a small fan repair becomes a board repair. A door that does not seal pushes heat onto the control panel and the cabinets around it. An element that trips the breaker is a short, and every reset feeds it, so leave the oven off. Prying a door that locked after self-clean adds a door repair to a lock repair. If you ever smell gas with the oven off, leave the house and call your gas utility before you call us.

Repair or replace
Repair your oven, or replace it?
Repair it when
- The failed part is an element, igniter, sensor, thermal fuse, hinge, gasket or door lock. These stay available for years.
- It is a wall oven that fits its cabinet cutout. A new one must match the hole, or the cabinet has to be altered.
- It is younger than about 13 years (electric) or 15 (gas), and the inside and the door are sound.
- It is a built-in from Thermador, Miele, Viking or Wolf, where a new oven costs far more than most repairs.
- The control board failed, but the maker still produces it for your model.
Replace it when
- The control board failed and the maker no longer produces it. That is the usual end of an older oven.
- The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new oven, and the oven is past the middle of its life.
- The inside of the oven is rusted through or its enamel lining is cracked. That cannot be repaired.
- It is the oven of a freestanding range, easy to swap, and the failed part is one of the expensive ones.
- It is past its expected life and this is the second or third big part in a couple of years.
A wall oven is cut into the cabinet at one width, 24, 27 or 30 inches, so replacing it can turn into a carpentry job. That is why the same repair is worth more on a wall oven than on a range. Our blog has more on whether to repair or replace your oven.
Wall ovens: single, double and combination
A single wall oven is one cavity on one control. A double usually runs two cavities from one control board, so a failed board takes both down, and when only one misbehaves the fault is in that cavity's element, sensor or door. A combination unit has a microwave on top with its own parts, and that half tends to fail first. With a heavy built-in there is almost no way to reach the back while it sits in the wall, so some jobs, Thermador oven repair among them, mean sliding the oven out onto blankets. The oven inside your range
The oven in a range fails the same ways a wall oven does, with one difference by fuel. In a gas range the oven is lit by a glow igniter, and a weak one is the most common reason a gas oven will not light or goes cold mid-bake. In an electric range the bake element sits below, often hidden under the oven floor, and a dead one shows up as a slow preheat and a pale bottom crust. Burners that work while the oven stays cold point at the oven's own parts, not at your gas or power supply. Safe to check before you call
Three checks cost nothing. Switch the oven's double breaker fully off and back on; a half-tripped breaker runs the clock but not the elements. Look for a lock icon or an odd display, which means control lock or Sabbath mode, not a fault. If bakes come out wrong, put an oven thermometer on the middle rack; our guide shows how to test oven temperature. Do not pry a door that locked after self-clean, do not keep resetting a breaker that trips, and do not use an oven with broken door glass. On an older oven, clean by hand: self-clean heat is what finishes off tired parts.

Oven repair: frequently asked questions
My gas oven igniter glows, so why is there no flame?
A glow bar can be bright and still be too weak. The safety valve only opens when the igniter draws enough current, and an old igniter falls below that while still glowing orange. So most probably it is the igniter, which is a common part. If the igniter is strong and the valve still stays shut, the valve itself has failed.
The oven door is locked after a self-clean cycle. Can I force it open?
Please do not. The latch can be released without damage, and prying bends the latch and the door. Wait for the oven to cool fully, then try one lock and unlock on the control. If it stays shut, the lock motor, its switch or the thermal fuse has failed.
Do you repair wall ovens in the cabinet, or does the oven have to come out?
Elements, sensors, hinges, gaskets and door glass are usually done from the front. A control board, the cooling fan or wiring at the back sometimes means the oven comes forward or out onto moving blankets, as a Thermador wall oven did when we were called out for appliance repair in Alexandria. Our technician tells you before lifting anything and puts it back level.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old wall oven?
Often yes, if the fault is an element, an igniter, a sensor, a hinge or a thermal fuse, because those parts stay available and the oven is built into a cutout that a new model may not match. If the control board has failed and the maker no longer stocks it, we will tell you to replace. There is no repair price before the visit; our technician gives you the full price at your home and you decide then.
What does an oven repair visit cost?
Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair, and every repair has a 90-day warranty. We do not quote a repair price over the phone, because an oven that will not heat can be a thermal fuse or a control board, and only a meter can tell which.
Do you carry oven parts on the truck?
The common ones, usually: bake and broil elements, igniters, temperature sensors and thermal fuses. A control board, door glass, or a Miele or Thermador part is ordered for your exact model and our technician returns to fit it. Every repair, first visit or second, carries the 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.
Why does my oven take so long to preheat?
Fifteen to twenty minutes is normal for a gas oven or an electric one with a hidden bake element; ovens with a visible element are quicker. Longer than it used to be points at one element out, an igniter lighting late, or a building supply at 208 volts instead of 240, which many apartment and condo buildings have and which adds about a quarter to the time. Only the first two are repairs.
Do you repair the microwave half of a combination wall oven?
Yes. The microwave in a combination unit has its own magnetron, inverter and door switches and fails in its own ways; a Samsung combination in Fairfax had a magnetron pulling low current. It is built-in microwave repair done inside an oven cabinet, and both halves are looked at on the same visit.
