Laundry Combo Repair in Northern Virginia, DC & Maryland

A laundry combo is either one drum that washes and then dries the same load, or a laundry center: a washer with a dryer bolted on top as a single cabinet. Both live in closets in condos and apartments across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland, and both fail in ways a separate washer or dryer never does. Our washer-dryer combo repair covers the ventless condenser and heat-pump combos and the stacked laundry centers from LG, Samsung, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and the other brands we work on.

What usually goes wrong

Laundry Combo problems, in the order we see them

The symptom you notice, and what it most probably is.

  1. 1

Clothes come out damp, or the dry cycle runs for hours

    Most probably

    • Lint that got past the filter, matted on the condenser or the heat-pump coils
    • No cold water reaching a condenser combo, which dries with it: valve closed, screens scaled or hoses swapped
    • Too much in the drum: on older condenser combos the dry stage handles about half of what the wash does
    • Drain pump or its filter half blocked, so the water taken out of the clothes cannot leave
    • Moisture sensor bars coated with softener film, so the cycle ends early
  2. 2

Water left in the drum, or the cycle stops with the door locked

    Most probably

    • Drain pump jammed by a coin, hair pin or sock; on a combo the same pump also carries off the drying water
    • Drain hose kinked behind the unit, or pushed too far down the standpipe
    • Drain pump motor burned out
    • Door lock holding shut because the control never saw the drain finish
  3. 3

A heat-pump combo tumbles but the air stays cold

    Most probably

    • Compressor, the pump at the heart of the heat pump, not starting: its relay, wiring or the control board
    • Heat-pump coils packed with lint, so the compressor overheats and shuts itself off
    • Sealed refrigerant loop has failed
    • Thermistor, the temperature sensor, reading wrong, so the control never calls for heat
  4. 4

Loud grinding, roaring or thumping in the spin

    Most probably

    • Drum bearings worn out: a roar that grows with spin speed, the classic front-load failure
    • Shock absorbers gone soft, so the drum slams the cabinet
    • A bra wire, coin or key caught between the drum and the outer tub
    • Stacked unit not level, rocking on the closet floor
  5. 5

Fills slowly, or will not fill at all

    Most probably

    • Inlet valve screens packed with scale from hard water
    • Inlet valve, the electric tap that lets water in, has a failed coil
    • Low water pressure on an upper floor
    • Pressure-sensor hose blocked with lint, so the control thinks the drum is already full
  6. 6

Water on the floor around the unit

    Most probably

    • Door boot, the big rubber door seal, cracked or holding grit
    • Drain hose split, or its clamp loose behind the unit
    • Condensate path on a ventless combo leaking inside the cabinet
    • Too much detergent, foaming out of the dispenser drawer
  7. 7

Musty smell and black marks on the door seal

    Most probably

    • Mold in the folds of the door boot
    • Wet lint left in the condenser after every dry
    • Detergent residue from cold, short washes
    • Door kept shut between loads, so the drum never dries out
  8. 8

Laundry center: the dryer on top runs but gives no heat

    Most probably

    • Heating element, the coil that makes the heat, burned open
    • Thermal fuse, a one-time safety part, blown because the vent is choked with lint
    • Cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat, the switches that control the heater, failed
    • Gas laundry center: igniter or gas valve coils
  9. 9

Laundry center: the dryer drum will not turn, or the washer below will not spin

    Most probably

    • Dryer belt snapped, or the idler pulley and drum rollers that carry it worn out
    • Dryer motor seized
    • Washer lid lock or lid switch failed, so the washer refuses to spin
    • Washer drive: belt, motor coupling, clutch or shifter, the parts that turn the tub
    • Washer gearcase (the transmission) worn out

Laundry Combo repair by brand

  • LG laundry combo repair

LG's compact ventless combos dry by condensing the steam with cold tap water. So damp clothes usually trace to the water side (a closed cold valve, swapped hoses, scaled inlet screens) or to the drain pump, which also carries off the drying water. The newer WashCombo uses a heat pump on a 120-volt plug, and lint on its coils stretches the dry time.

    LG appliance repair
  • Samsung laundry combo repair

Samsung's Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is a full-size heat-pump unit on a 120-volt plug that rinses its own condenser. When dry times creep up anyway, the likely causes are lint that got past the filter onto the coils, condensed water that is not draining, or a load too big for the dry stage. A drum that stays truly cold points at the heat pump itself.

  • GE laundry combo repair

The top half of a GE Spacemaker laundry center is an ordinary GE dryer, so GE dryer repair covers its faults: an element or thermal fuse when it runs cold, a rear bearing and front slides when it squeaks. Below, the lid lock and drain pump are the usual parts. On the Profile UltraFast Combo, slow drying starts at the filter: clean it each load.

    GE appliance repair
  • Whirlpool laundry combo repair

A Whirlpool laundry center is a top-load washer with a vented dryer above it. A washer that fills but will not agitate or spin is usually the lid lock or the shifter under the tub; older units wear out the motor coupling. A cold dryer up top is the thermal fuse or the element. Parts are shared with Whirlpool washers and easy to get.

    Whirlpool appliance repair
  • Frigidaire laundry combo repair

A Frigidaire laundry center cannot be split, so it is repaired where it stands. The dryer half is a standard Frigidaire dryer: a squeal or grind from the rear drum bearing, a cold drum from the heating element or its thermostat, and the belt. Below, a washer that stops full of water or will not spin usually comes down to the lid lock or the drain pump.

  • Kenmore laundry combo repair

Kenmore laundry centers were built for Sears by other makers, and the first three digits of the model number say which: 417 is Frigidaire, 110 is Whirlpool. So a Kenmore stack is no orphan: it takes the same elements, thermal fuses, belts and lid switches as the machine it is based on, and most are easy to get. The visit

What happens when the technician comes

You get a 2-hour arrival window, and our technician calls about 15 minutes before arriving. Use that call as the cue to clear the closet: detergent, baskets, anything stored on or beside the unit. Shoe covers and floor protection go down before anything moves.

A combo slides forward out of its closet. A laundry center is one tall cabinet that cannot be split, so it is repaired where it stands, from the front and the back. In a condo, find out where your water shut-off valves are and tell the front desk a contractor is coming.

You hear what failed and the full repair price before any work starts, and the $89 visit fee counts toward it. Pumps, valves, belts and heating parts are usually one visit of an hour or two. A drum bearing job on a combo is far longer, and you hear that first.

What waiting costs you

A load locked inside a combo full of water sours within a day, and mold settles into the door seal for weeks. A slow drip under a unit in a closet soaks the subfloor first and then shows on the ceiling of the home below, which turns a small repair into a conversation with the building. Lint left on the coils makes every dry cycle longer, so the machine runs more hours for the same laundry. On a laundry center, a thermal fuse that blows twice means a choked duct: cleaning the dryer vent is the fix.

Repair or replace

Repair your laundry combo, or replace it?

Repair it when

  • The fault is a pump, inlet valve, door lock, door seal, belt, heating element or thermal fuse. Those are worth fixing at almost any age.
  • A ventless combo that dries slowly. It is usually lint or drainage, not a failed major part.
  • A heat-pump combo only a few years old, with any fault other than the sealed system.
  • A laundry center that fits its closet, vent and 240-volt outlet exactly, since a new one has to match all three.
  • Drum bearings or a washer gearcase on a machine that is otherwise sound and not yet old.

Replace it when

  • The sealed system of a heat-pump combo has failed, compressor or refrigerant loop, and the maker's warranty no longer covers it.
  • Drum bearings on an old combo, where the long labor would cost more than half the price of a new machine.
  • A worn-out washer gearcase or a seized dryer motor in an old laundry center. The two halves cannot be replaced separately.
  • The part it needs is no longer made for a discontinued model.
  • The base of the cabinet has rusted through after a long, slow leak.
New appliances in their boxes

Before replacing a laundry center, measure the closet width, the vent position and the outlet, because the new cabinet has to match all three. Our guide to repair vs. replace covers the general rule for any appliance.

Which of the three machines do you have?

It changes the repair, so tell us when you call. An older ventless combo is a condenser unit: it dries by cooling the damp air, and on LG's compact models that cooling is done with cold tap water, so a drying fault often starts at the water supply. The newer full-size combos from GE, LG and Samsung are heat-pump units on an ordinary 120-volt plug; slow drying on those points to lint on the coils. A laundry center is a vented dryer fixed on top of a top-load washer, on a 240-volt circuit with a duct outdoors, and its faults are the ones on our dryer repair and washer repair pages.

What is safe to check before you call

On a combo, clean the lint filter, every load on a heat-pump model. Open the small door at the bottom front and clean the drain pump filter, with a towel down, because the same pump carries away the water from drying. Make sure both taps behind the unit are fully open; a condenser combo needs the cold one to dry. Try a half load. On a laundry center, clean the lint screen, check that both halves of the double breaker are on, and see that the outside vent flap lifts while the dryer runs. Leave the coils alone. Reaching them means taking the cabinet apart.

Slow drying: normal, or a fault?

A ventless combo never dries as fast as a vented dryer, and a heat-pump model runs cooler by design. Clothes come out warm rather than hot, and can feel slightly damp until they are shaken out and cool. That is normal. What is not normal is a change: dry times that keep growing, loads that used to come out dry and now do not, water left in the drum, or a heat-pump combo blowing cold air. Those are faults, and the first three are usually lint or drainage rather than an expensive part.

Very professional service. Quick to respond to request and came when they said. Though I didn't have them fix my issue (I realized I should probably just buy a new dryer as there were some unknowns) there was no hard sell of any extra service.

FAQ

Laundry Combo repair: frequently asked questions

Do you fix all-in-one washer-dryer combos, or only separate washers and dryers?

Both. We repair the ventless all-in-one combos, condenser and heat-pump, and the stacked laundry centers where the washer and dryer share one cabinet, in homes and in commercial laundry rooms across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Tell us which kind you have when you call so the technician comes prepared for it.

My combo washes fine but the clothes are still wet at the end. Is the dryer part broken?

Usually not in the way you would think. The likely causes are lint on the condenser or heat-pump coils, cold water not reaching a condenser unit, or a load that is too big for the dry stage, and the technician checks those before any part is replaced. A heat-pump combo that has gone truly cold is the one case where a big part, the compressor, may be involved.

How much does it cost to repair a laundry center or a combo?

Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair, and every repair has a 90-day warranty. We do not quote repair prices over the phone, because the same no-heat symptom can be a fuse or a heat pump.

Can you replace just the dryer half of my laundry center?

No. A laundry center is one cabinet, and the two halves are not sold separately. Parts inside either half can be replaced, which is usually what is needed. If the washer's gearcase or the dryer's motor has failed on an old unit, we will say so, and you decide.

The unit is in a closet in my condo. What do I need to arrange?

Clear the closet and the path to it, and find out where your unit's water shut-off valves are, since in some buildings they sit behind an access panel rather than on the hoses. If your front desk needs to know a contractor is coming, give them the 2-hour window we give you. The technician calls about 15 minutes before arriving and brings floor protection.

Is a heat-pump combo worth repairing?

For most faults, yes: pumps, valves, sensors, door locks and boots are ordinary repairs, and the machine itself is usually only a few years old. The exception is the sealed refrigerant system. If the compressor or the loop fails, check whether the maker's warranty still covers it, because outside that warranty it is normally a replace decision. Every repair we do carries a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.

Do you come to Maryland and DC, or only Virginia?

All three. We serve Northern Virginia, Washington DC and the Montgomery County side of Maryland, from appliance repair in Bethesda and Chevy Chase to Silver Spring, Rockville and Potomac. Someone answers the phone 24/7, and same-day service is possible most days.
