GE
The core line. Model numbers start with G for laundry, dishwashers and refrigerators and J for ranges, microwaves and hoods. Top-load washers are GTW, front-loaders GFW, vented dryers GTD or GFD, built-in dishwashers GDT (top control) or GDF (front control), gas ranges JGB, electric ranges JB, over-the-range microwaves JVM. Plain controls and plain parts.
GE Profile
The step up. Model numbers start with P. Profile adds SmartHQ app connectivity and features like TwinChill on French-door refrigerators, where one compressor feeds two separate evaporators so the fresh-food and freezer sections do not share air. Two evaporators means two coils and two fans to check when one side runs warm.
Café
Model numbers start with C. The point of the line is the hardware: knobs and handles you pick in brushed bronze, brushed copper, brushed stainless or brushed black, on matte white, matte black or stainless bodies. Underneath they are GE Appliances machines and take GE Appliances part numbers.
Monogram
The luxury line. Model numbers start with Z: ZDP dual-fuel and ZGP all-gas pro ranges, ZHP induction ranges, built-in and column refrigerators, and wall ovens and built-in Advantium ovens sold in Minimalist and Statement trim. Advantium built-ins come in 120-volt and 240-volt versions.
Haier and Hotpoint
Both are GE Appliances brands too. Haier model numbers start with Q and Hotpoint with H. Many parts cross over: the same ice maker kit fits GE and Hotpoint refrigerators. Haier is on our brand list.

What fails

What actually breaks on GE appliances

Top-load washer fills and drains but never washes, or washes but never spins
On GTW top-loaders a small shift actuator, which GE calls the mode shifter, moves the drive between the agitate stroke and high-speed spin. When it sticks in one position the washer does the other job fine and skips this one: no grinding, no leak, just wet clothes that were never washed or never spun. A healthy actuator gives a soft click as the machine hands off from wash to spin, and silence at that moment points straight at it. The symptom on a GE washer we saw in Great Falls was exactly that: the agitator stopped partway through and the load came out soaking wet and still dirty.

Dryer drum turns but there is no heat
GE electric dryers in the GTD series run the heater through a thermal fuse on the blower housing at the back, a high-limit thermostat and the element itself. The thermal fuse is a one-shot part: once it blows the dryer runs cold for good, and it almost always blows because the vent is choked with lint. So the fix is the fuse plus the vent, or the new fuse goes the same way. A GE dryer in Vienna ran with no heat at all and traced to exactly that, a blown thermal fuse.

Fresh-food side warm, frost on the freezer back wall
GE side-by-sides and top-freezers defrost the evaporator with a glass-tube heater and a defrost thermostat behind the freezer's back panel. When the heater or thermostat fails, the coil ices over, airflow to the fresh-food side stops, and the compressor runs and runs. The other suspect is the main control board (WR55X10942 on many models). It drives the fans and the compressor relay, so a board fault shows up as the evaporator fan not running, the compressor off while both fans spin, or a steady clicking from behind the fridge, often after a power outage.

Ice maker cycles but never fills, or just stops
The electromechanical ice maker on most older GE refrigerators is the WR30X10093 kit. When the mold tray stays dry the ice maker can keep turning over without ever dropping a cube. The water side is a fill tube that freezes shut or an inlet valve that no longer opens. If the tray makes and ejects cubes when it is filled by hand, the ice maker itself is fine and the water path is the problem.

Gas oven will not heat while the burners work
On JGB and JGBS GE gas ranges the bake igniter (WB13K21) has to glow hot enough to pull the current that opens the gas valve. As it ages it glows dimmer, the oven takes longer and longer to light, then never does. More than about 90 seconds from turn-on to flame means it is on the way out; two minutes of glow with no flame means it is done. The oven sensor (WB21X22134) is the other common part when an oven runs hot, runs cold or will not hold temperature; it should read about 1,080 to 1,090 ohms at room temperature.

Coil burner on an electric range dead, or the oven slow to preheat
GE's plug-in coil elements are Calrod units. The 6-inch coil is WB30M1 and the 8-inch is WB30M2, and they pull straight out of a receptacle block. The block can burn as well as the coil, so both get checked. A slow preheat on the same range is usually the bake element at the bottom of the oven or the oven sensor.

Over-the-range microwave runs, light and fan on, but food stays cold
GE's Spacemaker over-the-range microwaves (JVM series) use two door switches, plus a magnetron fed by a high-voltage capacitor and diode. A door switch the control stops reading is a small part. A failed magnetron is the big one, and on an older Spacemaker our technician will tell you at the house whether it makes sense.

Parts

GE part numbers tell you what they fit: WB is cooking, WR is refrigeration, WD is dishwashers, WE is laundry. GE Appliances runs its own parts store, geapplianceparts.com, and the same numbers are stocked by the big independent distributors. The catalog is also old and stable: the WR30X10093 ice maker fits GE, Hotpoint and Kenmore refrigerators going back years, and the WB13K21 igniter covers most JGB and JGBS ranges. Common GE parts ride on our truck. Anything else is ordered and our technician comes back to fit it. Every part is looked up by model number, so have the tag on the appliance handy.

Who makes GE appliances now

The GE on the door is a name, not the company. GE Appliances is owned by Haier, and it still builds washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators and ranges in its own plants in Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

For you that means two things. Parts come from a maker that is still here and still runs its own parts store. And the machines are built to be opened up: laundry panels that come off the front, plug-in elements, a main board behind a single cover on the back of a GE refrigerator.

Reading the model tag before you call

The first letter of a GE Appliances model number is the line: G or J is GE, P is GE Profile, C is Café, Z is Monogram, Q is Haier, H is Hotpoint. The next letters are the machine. On laundry, T is a top-load, F a front-load and U a unitized stacked unit, so GTW is a GE top-load washer and GTD its matching vented dryer. On ranges, B is a 30-inch freestanding and S a slide-in, with G for gas and nothing for electric, so JGB is a GE gas freestanding range and JB the electric one. On dishwashers, T is top control and F front control.

Have the model number ready when you call. It is on a tag on the appliance itself, usually inside a door or lid, and it is what every GE part is looked up by.

Do you repair GE Profile, Café and Monogram, or only plain GE?

All four. They are one company, GE Appliances, and the parts come from the same catalog. The work is the same job with a different letter at the front of the model number.

Is FixDaddy an authorized GE servicer?

Usually, yes. On a GE electric dryer that is most often the thermal fuse, the high-limit thermostat or the heating element, and the fuse blows because the vent is blocked, so the vent has to be dealt with too or the new fuse goes the same way. Our technician gives you the price at the house before any work starts, and the repair carries a 90-day warranty.

My GE fridge is a 2009 side-by-side. Can you still get parts?

Almost always. GE keeps the same part numbers in its catalog for years, the WR-prefixed refrigeration parts are stocked by GE's own parts store and by the big distributors, and the common ones ride on our truck. If a part has to be ordered, our technician orders it and comes back to fit it.

Why does my GE top-loader fill and drain but never wash?

On a GTW top-load washer that is the classic mode shifter symptom. The shift actuator moves the drive between agitate and spin, and when it sticks in spin the basket runs fine but the agitator never moves, so the clothes come out wet and dirty. It is a known part on these washers.

Do you work on Haier appliances too?

Yes. Haier is one of the brands we repair, and Haier and GE Appliances are one company, with Haier models carrying GE Appliances part numbers.

Do you repair GE dishwashers, microwaves and wall ovens?
