TC5 top-load washer (Classic Clean)
The one built the old way. The agitator is driven straight off a two-speed motor through a mechanical transmission and a belt, inside a stainless wash tub with a porcelain outer tub. It fills the tub instead of sensing the load, washes hard and loud, and spins at about 710 rpm, so clothes come out wetter than from a front-loader. Five-year parts-and-labor warranty from the maker.
TR3, TR5 and TR7 top-load washers
The newer design. The agitator is not tied directly to the motor; the tub and the water do more of the work, so it runs quieter and gentler and spins at about 840 rpm. The TR3 has dials and four cycles, the TR7 has digital controls and a variable-speed 1 HP motor. The current models, with numbers ending in 006, add a delayed lid lock. Speed Queen rates them for 25 years of home use.
FF7 front-load washer
A 3.5-cubic-foot front-loader with a stainless wash tub and a stainless outer tub, a variable-speed 1 HP motor and a 1,200 rpm top spin. The wear points are the ones every front-loader has: the door boot seal, the inner door bezel and the drain pump. Five-year warranty from the maker.
DR3, DR5, DR7, DC5 and DF7 dryers
Seven-cubic-foot dryers with a galvanized steel cylinder, an up-front lint filter, a moisture sensor and a reversible door. The electric versions use a 5,350-watt element, and every one of them also comes in gas. The DC5 is sold as the TC5's matching dryer, and the DF7 puts the controls on the front. Warranties run three to seven years.
SF7 stacked washer-dryer
A front-load washer under a dryer in one cabinet, the type our stacked washer-dryer repair page covers: 26 7/8 inches wide and 78 1/8 inches tall, 3.5 cubic feet below and 7.0 above, with the controls in the middle. It is the Speed Queen that fits a condo laundry closet, and it needs front-loader door clearance: about 54 inches deep with the door open.
Older top-loaders with a mechanical timer dial
The Speed Queens sold before the TR line, with a timer that clicks through the cycle and the wash action the TC5 kept. Timer knobs, control knobs, inlet valves and belts for them are still sold, so age alone is not a reason to give one up.
Speed Queen Commercial pay machines
The pay washers and dryers in apartment and condo laundry rooms and in laundromats are Speed Queen Commercial, a separate line with its own Quantum controls and its own parts. We repair commercial machines as well as residential ones.

What fails

What actually breaks on Speed Queen appliances

Washer fills slowly, fills with cold only, or drips into the tub when it is off
The water inlet valve, or the mixing valve on the two-hose models, is one of the most-purchased Speed Queen washer parts. Screens clog with grit from the supply, the coils weaken, and a valve that no longer seals lets water seep in between cycles. A slow fill can also be a kinked hose or a half-closed tap, so look at those first.

Washer will not spin, or the tub turns but the clothes come out soaking
On the belt-driven TC5 and the older dial models, the belt and the idler lever that keeps tension on it wear first. The motor runs, the water drains, nothing spins hard. A stretched belt shows up as a wet load; a snapped one as no spin at all. On the TC5 that is a front-panel job: the panel comes off and the belt is right there.

Washer will not start, or stops part-way through the cycle
On TR models with a lid lock, the lock kit and its catch are wear parts. When the lock cannot confirm the lid is shut, the control refuses to spin or stops mid-cycle. Earlier TR models had no lid lock at all, and the current ones, with numbers ending in 006, have a delayed lid lock, so it helps to know which you have. The fix is usually the lock assembly or the catch.

Washer will not drain, or leaves standing water in the tub
The drain pump. Socks, coins and hair ties end up in it, and the impeller or the pump motor gives out. The FF7 and SF7 front-loaders also collect lint in the pump housing. A drain hose that sits too low or too high causes the same symptom.

Water on the floor
From the front of an FF7 or SF7, it is nearly always the door boot seal, which cracks with age or gets a nick from a zipper. From underneath a top-loader, look to the drain pump, a hose clamp or the fabric softener dispenser, which is a replaceable part on these machines.

Dryer runs but does not heat, or needs two cycles
The electric models use a 5,350-watt heating element, and when it opens, the drum turns and the air stays cold. The thermal fuse and the limit thermostat sit in the same circuit and fail for the same reason: a vent packed with lint that overheats the dryer. A new element in front of a blocked vent does not last, so clean the dryer vent as well.

Dryer squeals, thumps or scrapes
A squeal is the idler pulley wheel and its bearing. A thump every turn is a flat spot on a drum roller. A scrape is a worn roller letting the cylinder rub. The drum roller kit, the idler pulley and the cylinder belt are ordinary replacement parts for every current Speed Queen dryer, and it makes sense to do them together while the drum is out.

A knob spins freely or the timer shaft snaps
On the dial-control washers and dryers, the timer knob and the control knob are the parts that break in the hand, and the timer shaft itself can shear. Knob assemblies are sold separately, so a broken knob does not mean a new timer, and a sheared shaft means a new timer, not a new machine.

The maker's own support page sends you to Alliance Laundry's parts store, which lists residential Speed Queen parts by model number and ships most orders the same day, and the big appliance-parts sellers carry the common items: inlet valves, drain pumps, belts, lid lock kits and door boot seals for Speed Queen washer repair; heating elements, thermal fuses, drum rollers and idler pulleys for dryer repair. Common parts ride on our truck. Anything model-specific is ordered and the technician returns to fit it, and the $89 visit fee is credited toward that repair.

Why a Speed Queen gets repaired, not replaced

Most washers are built to a price. A Speed Queen is built to a life: the maker rates the TR top-loaders for 25 years of home use, backs the TR7 and DR7 with a seven-year parts-and-labor warranty, and puts a mechanical transmission, a stainless wash tub and a porcelain outer tub in a machine that costs more than most top-loaders. Throwing that away over a belt makes no sense.

It also helps that the machine was designed to be opened. The TC5 is front-serviceable: the front panel comes off and the belt, the pump and the motor are right there. The parts that wear are small and stocked: a belt, a lid lock, an inlet valve, a drain pump, a heating element. A dealer that tracks its own service calls puts Speed Queen top-loaders at a 4.6 percent service rate, level with the top-load average, and notes that the usual failure is a belt.

So our advice on a Speed Queen is almost always to fix it. The exceptions are a cracked outer tub or a transmission that has let go on a very old machine, and you will hear that at your home before anything is done. The $89 visit covers the diagnosis and the full repair price; if you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair, and the work carries a 90-day warranty.

Under the maker's warranty, or out of it

Speed Queen's warranties are long: three, five or seven years parts and labor depending on the model, and that coverage runs through Speed Queen and the servicers it appoints, not through an independent shop like us. If your machine is inside that window, a warranty claim is your first call.

Once the warranty has run out, or for a problem it does not cover, we are the other route. Independent means we fit the same replacement parts anyone can buy, at your home, with our own 90-day warranty on the repair. Tell us the model number when you book, because a TC5, a TR7 and a dial-timer machine are three different designs and the technician should arrive knowing which one is waiting.

Do you repair the older Speed Queen washers with the mechanical timer?

Is a Speed Queen worth repairing, or should I just buy a new one?

My Speed Queen is still under its warranty. Should I call you or Speed Queen?

Call Speed Queen first. We are independent, so work under the maker's three-, five- or seven-year warranty runs through Speed Queen, not us. If the warranty has ended, or the problem is not covered, book us.

Why do clothes come out of my TC5 wetter than from my old front-loader?

Because it spins slower. The TC5 tops out around 710 rpm, the TR models around 840, and the FF7 front-loader at 1,200. A damp load from a TC5 is normal. A soaking one, or a load that does not spin at all, points to the belt or the idler.

Do you work on the coin-operated Speed Queen machines in our building's laundry room?

Yes. We do commercial appliance repair as well as residential, and that includes the Speed Queen Commercial washers and dryers in apartment and condo laundry rooms. The parts and the design differ from the home models, so give us the model number when you call.
