What usually goes wrong

Garbage Disposal problems, in the order we see them

The symptom you notice, and what it most probably is.

  1. 1

It hums at the switch, but the plate does not turn

    Most probably

    • A fruit pit, bone, bottle cap or piece of glass wedged against the grinding plate
    • A spoon or other utensil that slipped into the chamber
    • Motor seized, so the plate stays stuck even with the chamber empty
  2. 2

Nothing at all happens when you flip the switch

    Most probably

    • Overload protector tripped: the red button under the unit has popped out
    • Breaker tripped, or the cord has come out of the outlet under the sink
    • Worn wall switch, or a countertop push button that no longer triggers
    • Motor burned out after being run against too many jams
  3. 3

The red reset button keeps popping out

    Most probably

    • A jam that was loosened but never removed, still dragging on the plate
    • Big loads fed in at once with too little cold water running
    • A motor near the end of its life, overheating under a normal load
  4. 4

Disposal leaking into the cabinet under the sink

    Most probably

    • Seal at the sink flange, where the unit hangs from the sink, has let go
    • Dishwasher hose loose at the side inlet, or its clamp missing
    • Cracked gasket or loose bolts where the drain elbow leaves the unit
    • Worn internal seals, so water seeps from the bottom of the body itself
  5. 5

It grinds, but the sink drains slowly or backs up

    Most probably

    • Ground food left in the chamber because too little water was run
    • A trap or pipe past the unit clogged with grease, coffee grounds or eggshell, which is drain work, not a disposal fault
    • Stringy peels or husks wound around the grinding plate
  6. 6

The dishwasher stopped draining after a new disposal went in

    Most probably

    • Knockout plug still sealing the disposal's dishwasher inlet
    • Drain hose pushed on without its clamp, or kinked behind the cabinet
    • Hose laid flat, with no high loop under the counter
  7. 7

Dirty sink water shows up in the bottom of the dishwasher

    Most probably

    • Dishwasher drain hose runs flat to the disposal instead of looping up high
    • Air gap on the sink deck clogged with debris
    • Chamber or pipe past the disposal partly blocked, pushing water back up the hose
  8. 8

Rattling, clanking or a loud vibration while it runs

    Most probably

    • Something hard loose in the chamber: a screw, a coin, a bottle cap
    • Lower mounting ring worked loose from the sink mount, so the unit shakes
    • An impeller on the grinding plate stuck instead of swinging freely

Garbage Disposal repair by brand

  • GE garbage disposal repair

GE makes continuous-feed and batch-feed disposers, and a batch-feed one runs only with its twist-top stopper turned to run. GE clears jams from above, turning the flywheel with a broom handle, and puts the red reset on the bottom or low on the front. A GE dishwasher that still holds water with the disposer clear needs GE dishwasher repair.

  • Whirlpool garbage disposal repair

Whirlpool disposers take a hex wrench in the socket at the center of the base: work it back and forth, then press the red reset on the bottom until it clicks. Whirlpool is clear about when to stop: a burning smell, smoke or a leak means get service, and so does a unit that still trips or stays silent once the jam is out.

  • KitchenAid garbage disposal repair

KitchenAid packs a small wrench with its disposers for the hole in the bottom center: work it until it turns one full circle, let the motor cool three to five minutes, then press the red reset. A KitchenAid dishwasher that still will not empty, with its hose clamped to the disposer inlet, needs KitchenAid dishwasher repair.

  • Frigidaire garbage disposal repair

Several Frigidaire disposers are direct-wired, with no plug under the sink, so the power comes off at the breaker before any tool goes into the chamber or the unit is loosened. On those, a disposal that is silent at the switch means checking the breaker and the wall switch first, since there is no cord to have worked loose.

The visit

What happens when the technician comes

Your arrival window is two hours wide, and the technician phones when about 15 minutes out. Before the sink cabinet is opened, shoe covers go on and floor protection goes down. Emptying that cabinet ahead of time helps, since the disposal, its wiring and the dishwasher hose all sit at the back.

Nothing under the sink is touched until the technician has named the failed part in plain English and quoted the whole repair. Say yes and the $89 visit is credited to that quote. Parts and labor on that repair then carry a 90-day warranty. If the disposal turns out to be past saving, you hear that just as plainly, with no pressure either way.

What waiting costs you

A disposal that hums is a motor straining against a plate that cannot move, and every retry heats the windings a little more. A jam that a wrench would have freed can end as a burned-out motor. A slow drip under the sink soaks into the cabinet floor, which swells and softens long before it shows, then reaches the kitchen floor. Meanwhile ground food sitting in a dead chamber starts to smell, and a sink you cannot drain into is hard to cook around.

Repair or replace

Repair your garbage disposal, or replace it?

Repair it when

  • It hums because something hard is stuck in the chamber. Clearing the jam and resetting the overload is often all it needs.
  • It leaks at the sink flange on top. That seal can be remade without buying a new unit.
  • It leaks where the dishwasher hose or the drain elbow joins the side. A clamp or a gasket is a small part.
  • It is silent, but the plate turns freely with the wrench. The fault is usually the reset, the switch or the wiring.

Replace it when

  • Water seeps from the bottom of the body itself, with every joint above it dry.
  • It still only hums with the chamber empty and the reset pressed. The motor is worn out.
  • The housing is cracked or rusted through.
  • It has passed the eight to fifteen years a disposal usually lasts, and it keeps jamming or leaking.
New appliances in their boxes

Our technician tells you which list your disposal is on, with the full price, before any work starts. When a repair is not worth paying for, that is what you are told.

Disposal or dishwasher? A two-minute test

Turn on the cold tap and run the disposal for about 30 seconds. If it spins and the sink drains, the disposal is fine. If the sink holds water while the disposal hums or stays silent, the disposal is the fault.

Next, start a dishwasher cycle and cancel it after a minute; most machines pump out when cancelled. Water left in the tub while the sink drains freely points to the dishwasher's pump, filter or hose, which is dishwasher repair. If the disposal spins but the sink still backs up, the clog is in the pipe beyond it: drain work, not an appliance fault.

What is safe to try before you call

Turn the disposal off at the wall switch, then unplug it under the sink or switch off its breaker. Keep your fingers out of the chamber and lift out anything you can see with tongs. On many models a hex wrench fits a socket in the center of the bottom: work it back and forth until the plate turns a full circle. Wait a few minutes, press the red reset button, and try once with cold water running. If it hums again, or you smell burning, stop and call.

    June 2026 · dryer

Very professional service. Quick to respond to request and came when they said. Though I didn't have them fix my issue (I realized I should probably just buy a new dryer as there were some unknowns) there was no hard sell of any extra service.

FAQ

Garbage Disposal repair: frequently asked questions

Do you repair the garbage disposal itself, or only the dishwasher?

Both. A disposal that jams, hums, trips its reset, leaks or goes dead is a repair we come out for, and so is a dishwasher that will not drain into it. They share one drain, and the technician finds exactly which one failed and tells you before anything is fixed.

Do you install and replace garbage disposals?

Yes. Along with repairs, we do garbage disposal installation: a worn-out disposal taken down and a new one put in its place. If you are not sure yours needs replacing, the technician tells you plainly whether a repair or a new disposal makes sense, before anything is done.

How much does a garbage disposal repair cost?

We do not quote a disposal repair before the visit: a jammed plate and a burned-out motor are not the same job. Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair, and every repair has a 90-day warranty.

My disposal only hums. Should I keep flipping the switch?

No. The hum means power is reaching a motor that cannot turn the plate, and each extra try heats it closer to burning out. Switch it off and clear the jam first. If one try after the reset still only hums, leave it off and call (888) 811-0088.

Why won't the dishwasher drain since we put in a new disposal?

The usual reason is the knockout plug. A new disposal comes with a disc sealing its dishwasher inlet, and until it is knocked out and removed, the dishwasher pumps against a wall. A hose pushed on without its clamp, or one lying flat with no high loop, causes trouble too. With the plug out and the hose right, the fault sits in the dishwasher, and our dishwasher not draining guide walks through those causes.

Can a technician look at my disposal today?

Most days, yes. Call (888) 811-0088, which is answered 24/7, and ask for same-day appliance repair. Whichever day you book, the arrival window is two hours.

Is the disposal repair under warranty?

Yes. Disposal repairs fall under the 90-day parts-and-labor warranty we give on every repair, counted from the day the work is finished. If the part we fitted or the fix we made fails inside those 90 days, it is covered.

Is it safe to reach into the disposal to pull something out?

Not with your hand. Switch it off at the wall, then unplug it or turn off its breaker, and lift the object out with tongs or long pliers. GE, KitchenAid and Whirlpool all say the same: tongs or another tool in the chamber, never a hand.

Garbage Disposal not doing its job?

Someone answers now. The visit is $89, credited to the repair, and most days we are out the same day.
