Samsung stove repair
On Samsung gas stoves the usual complaint is clicking that carries on after the burner is lit, or starts after a wipe-down: moisture on the ignition switches behind the knobs. Once dry, a switch that still clicks has failed. A Samsung stove in Vienna came to us sparking nonstop after a cleaning. On Samsung glass tops it is a surface element that stays cold.

GE, Profile and Café gas tops click on and off after cleaning; check first for a knob not popped fully back to off, or moisture. On GE coil stoves the coil burns out and lifts straight out for a new one. On GE glass tops, an element that never glows, or glows only on high, is the element, its limiter or the switch behind the knob.

Whirlpool builds coil-top and glass-top electric stoves under its own name and as Maytag and KitchenAid. On coil tops the weak spot is the receptacle the coil plugs into: a loose fit arcs, the block scorches and takes the coil with it, so both are changed together. On glass tops an element that cycles on and off is normal; one that never heats is not.

KitchenAid gas stoves use sealed burners with a separate cap and head. A cap set down a few degrees off after cleaning stops the spark reaching the gas, so a burner that clicks and will not light often needs only the cap set straight. When it is not the cap, it is that burner's igniter or the spark module.

Frigidaire electric stoves, coil and glass-top, come down to three parts: the element, the infinite switch behind the knob, and the block the element plugs into. Frigidaire also built the Kenmore stoves whose model numbers start with 790, so parts cross over. On Frigidaire gas tops, a burner that lights late with a pop is a clogged port or a crooked cap.

Viking open burners throw a lot of heat and take the full force of boil-overs, so igniter tips and ports carbon up. When every burner clicks and none light, the spark module is the usual suspect; when it is one burner, it is that burner's igniter or a dirty port. Uneven flames are the other regular Viking complaint.

Thermador Star burners have more ports than a round burner, so a boil-over has more places to clog. Check the cap, wet or clogged ports and a damp igniter first. Clicking on the ExtraLow setting is normal, because the burner relights as it cycles. A Thermador stove in Oakton came to us clicking but never lighting; a failed igniter is the usual finding.

Kenmore is a store brand, so the stove under the badge was built by someone else, and the first three digits of the model number say who: 790 is Frigidaire, 110 is Whirlpool, 362 is GE. That decides which igniter, element or switch fits, so have the number ready when you call. It is on a label inside the storage drawer or around the oven door frame.

The visit
What happens when the technician comes
Stovetop repairs are mostly done from above. The grates, caps and burner heads lift off, or the whole top hinges up, so the stove usually stays where it is. It is pulled forward only for parts at the back, such as the pressure regulator or the gas connection.
Before we come, let the top cool and clear the pots off it and off the counters beside it. Skip the wet wipe-down that morning: a damp top clicks by itself and hides the real fault.
An igniter, a coil, a switch or a valve is usually under an hour of work, and common parts are on the truck. A glass top or a touch board is ordered for your model. The technician calls about 15 minutes before arriving, inside a 2-hour window, and tells you the full price before picking up a tool.
What waiting costs you
A spark module left clicking around the clock never rests and fails sooner, which adds a module to what began as a wet switch. A burner that lights late lets gas pool under the grate, then catches with a whump that singes fingers. A scorched coil receptacle cooks every new coil you plug into it. A cracked glass top spreads with each heat cycle, and a spill through the crack reaches live wiring, so leave those elements off. A burner that will not fully shut off should not wait at all. If you smell gas with every knob off, leave the house and call your gas company before you call us.

Repair or replace
Repair your stove, or replace it?
Repair it when
- The fault is one part: an igniter, a spark module, a burner valve, a coil, a radiant element or the switch behind a knob.
- It is a gas stove. Gas burners have very little in them to wear out, so the rest of the stove is usually sound.
- The glass top is intact and the fault is under it: an element, a limiter or a switch.
- The glass is cracked, but the top is still made for your model and costs well under half the price of a new stove.
Replace it when
- The glass top is cracked and the assembly is no longer made, or it costs more than half the price of a new stove.
- The touch-control board on a knobless top has failed and is out of production.
- This is the third part in a year on the same stove.
- The burner box or the frame under the top has rusted through.
Most stovetop faults are a single part, so repair usually wins. The exceptions are the glass and the electronics, which are made for one model and go out of production. There is more in our guide on when to repair or replace an appliance.
Stove, range, cooktop or oven: which page is this?
Stove is the word most people use for the whole appliance, so here is how we split it. This page is the top: burners, igniters, coil and radiant elements, the glass, switches, knobs and valves. The box below, with its bake igniter, elements, door and fan, is oven repair. Either way it is the same visit.
Gas or electric changes the whole job
On a gas stove the parts that fail are the igniters, the spark module, the spark switches behind the knobs, the burner valves and the pressure regulator. Natural gas and propane need different orifices and pressure, and a stove set up for one and fed the other burns yellow and sooty, or tiny and weak, on every burner at once; no cleaning changes that. Homes beyond the gas mains, as in parts of Loudoun County, run on propane. An electric stove has none of those parts. A coil top fails at the coil, its receptacle and the switch behind the knob; a glass top fails at the element, its limiter and, on knobless models, the touch board.
What you can safely check before you call
Try these first; they cost nothing. Lift the grate and set the burner cap back down so its tabs sit in the notches; a cap that is a little off will click forever. If you cleaned the top today, give it a few hours to dry before you decide the igniter is dead. On a coil stove, pull the cold coil out and push it back in firmly so both prongs seat. Stove repair: frequently asked questions
My gas stove has been clicking nonstop since I cleaned it. Is the igniter broken?
Usually not yet. Water gets behind the knobs and onto the spark switches, and the stove clicks until it dries, which can take a few hours or overnight. Make sure each knob is pushed fully back to off, then give it time. If it is still clicking the next day, a switch or the spark module is stuck, and that is a part swap.
Can you fix a cracked glass cooktop, or do I need a new stove?
The glass cannot be patched, but it can be replaced as a complete top assembly made for your model, with the elements moved over. Whether that makes sense depends on the age of the stove and whether the part is still made. Stop using the elements until it is done; a spill through the crack reaches live parts underneath.
One burner only works on high. What is wrong with it?
On an electric stove that is nearly always the infinite switch behind the knob, the part that pulses power on and off to hold a lower setting. When it fails it either sends full power or none. On a glass top the limiter on the element can do the same thing. Both are straightforward to replace.
How much is the visit, and what do I get for it?
Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair. We do not quote repair prices over the phone, because nobody has seen the stove yet.
Is the stove repair covered if the same burner fails again?
Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on the part and the labor. If the burner we fixed stops working again inside that window, call and we come back to it. The warranty covers the repair we made, not a different part failing later on the same stove.
My stove runs on propane. Do you work on it?
Yes. A propane stove has the same igniters, valves and switches as a natural gas one; the differences are the orifices and the pressure. Most ranges ship set up for natural gas and need a conversion kit for propane, so a stove that was never converted burns big yellow flames on every burner. The technician can tell you which set yours has.
Why do my gas flames burn yellow now when they used to be blue?
Gas that burns yellow is not getting enough air. On a stove that used to burn blue, the cause is usually grease in the burner ports or the air path, or a cap set down crooked after cleaning. Clearing the ports and setting the cap straight usually brings the blue back. If it is every burner and it started after a move, the gas type is worth checking too.
Do you carry stove parts on the truck, or is it always two visits?
Common parts are on the truck, so many stovetop jobs finish on the first visit. If your model needs a part we do not have with us, the technician orders it and comes back to fit it. Either way you know the full price before anything is ordered.
