On LG front-loaders the usual call is a drum full of water that will not spin: the drain pump is blocked or dead, and the machine will not spin until the water is out. A drum that jerks back and forth and stops points at the sensor that reads the motor position. On LG top-loaders an off-balance stop on every load and a banging tub mean worn suspension rods.

What happens when the technician comes
A drain pump, a lid or door lock, an inlet valve, a belt or a set of suspension rods is usually about an hour of work. A door boot or a drum bearing takes longer, because the front of the machine, or most of it, has to come apart.
The washer is pulled forward to reach its back and its hoses, so clear the top of it, the floor in front and the path to the laundry closet. In a stacked pair the dryer sometimes has to come down first; floor protection goes under all of it. If the drum is full of water, leave it. The technician drains it and gets your laundry out before anything else.
Expect a 2-hour arrival window and a phone call roughly 15 minutes before the technician reaches you. The fault is explained and the full repair price given before any part is replaced.
What waiting costs you
A washer that will not drain leaves a load sitting in dirty water. Within a day it smells, and the smell gets into the door seal and stays. Water on the floor is the bigger problem: a slow leak under the machine soaks the subfloor and, in a condo or a townhouse, the ceiling of the home below, and nobody sees it until the stain appears. A machine that bangs in spin keeps working for a while, but every load wears the bearing and the tub a little more, and a rod or damper swap turns into a much bigger repair.

Repair or replace
Repair your washer, or replace it?
Repair it when
- A pump, lid lock, door lock, inlet valve, belt, shift actuator, suspension rods, dampers or a door boot failed. These are normal repairs on a washer of any age.
- The machine is only a few years old. Almost any single fault is worth fixing then, a control board included.
- It is a simple agitator top-loader or a Speed Queen. They are easy to open, the parts are common, and they run for years after a repair.
- It is a compact or stacked unit fitted to a closet. A machine of that exact size is harder to replace than to repair.
Replace it when
- The drum bearing failed on an old front-loader and the outer tub or the drum support behind it has corroded too. That job runs past half the price of a new washer.
- The outer tub is cracked, or the cabinet has rusted through.
- The part no longer exists. A model long out of production may have no board or tub left to buy.
- It is an old machine that has already had one major repair and now needs another.
An old agitator top-loader also uses far more water than a front-loader, which belongs in the math on a big repair. The technician gives you the full repair price at your home and leaves the decision to you, and the $89 visit fee counts toward the repair if you go ahead.
Front-loaders and top-loaders fail in different places
A front-loader's weak points are the rubber door boot, the drain pump filter that catches everything left in pockets, and the drum bearing, which wears faster the faster the drum spins. A top-loader's weak points are the lid lock, the suspension rods that hang the tub, the parts that turn the agitator and, on belt-drive models, the belt. It is easier to open and quicker to repair. Stacked laundry centers and washer-dryer combos are a third case: they sit in closets, and reaching the parts is a large share of the job. If the dryer half is the trouble, see dryer repair.
Safe to check before you call
Power first. A washer that is completely dead, with no lights, is often a tripped breaker or an outlet with a reset button that has cut out. Then the taps behind the machine: both fully open, hoses not kinked, because a washer that gets no water simply waits and looks stuck. If the machine is new or was just moved, look at the back for shipping bolts; a drum still locked for transport shakes hard enough to damage the machine. On a front-loader that will not drain, the small door at the bottom front hides the pump filter. Put towels down, open it slowly, and check for a sock or coins.
When the display shows a code
A code names the job the washer could not finish, not the part that failed. OE on an LG, 5E or 5C on a Samsung and F21 or F9 E1 on a Whirlpool all mean the water did not drain in time, and the cause can be a sock in the filter, a dead pump or a kinked hose. Write the code down before you unplug the machine, because unplugging usually clears it, and tell us when you call. How much does it cost to fix a washer?
We do not quote a repair price over the phone, because nobody can tell what is wrong with a washer without opening it. Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what is wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home, with no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair.
My washer is full of water and the door is locked. What do I do?
Do not force the door; the lock is holding because the machine still has water in it. Turn the washer off so nothing tries to restart, and call. Our technician drains it, releases the lock and gets your laundry out before starting on the fault, which is usually the drain pump or its filter.
Is my washer worth repairing, or should I buy a new one?
Most single-part faults are worth repairing on a washer that is not very old: pumps, locks, valves, belts, rods, boots and boards. A worn drum bearing on an old front-loader is the case where we sometimes say replace. Our technician tells you either way at the visit, with the repair price in front of you before you decide.
Can you come today?
Most days, yes. Someone answers the phone 24/7, and we book same-day visits whenever the schedule allows. You get a 2-hour arrival window and a call about 15 minutes before the technician arrives. Why does my front-loader smell musty?
Tap water across this region is moderately hard, and minerals and detergent build up as a film in the fold of the door boot, which is where the smell comes from. Leave the door open between loads, wipe the boot fold now and then, and use less detergent than the cap suggests, because too many suds also push water past the seals. If the smell comes with water that never fully drains, the pump filter needs clearing.
Do you install washers?
Yes. For a washer installation, our technician sets the machine in place, levels it, connects the hot and cold lines and the drain, removes every shipping bolt and transit brace, and runs a test cycle before leaving. Bolts left in or a washer sitting off-level are what make a new machine bang and walk on its first spin.
