Which Thermador ovens we work on
Thermador’s 30-inch electric wall oven comes in two looks. Masterpiece has touch controls and a straight handle: MED301WS single, ME302WS double, MEM301WS with a microwave on top, MEDS301WS and MEDS302WS steam. Professional has cast-metal knobs and a round handle: POD301W, POD302W, PODS301W, PODS302W and the PODMCW31W combination. The main cavity is 4.5 cubic feet with True Convection, telescopic racks, Wi-Fi, a 2-hour self-clean and hydraulic SoftClose hinges; the steam cavity is 2.8.
Known weak points: the hinge dampers, the bake element sealed under the floor, the thermal fuse and cooling fan after self-clean, scale in the steam generator, and a discontinued relay and display board on the older SC301 and SC302. Range ovens: Pro Harmony is 24 3/4 inches deep with a 4.9-cubic-foot oven, Pro Grand 27 7/8 inches with 5.7; the all-gas Pro Harmony has no self-clean, the others do.
Parts
As with all our Thermador appliance repair, the parts come through BSH, the same parent as Bosch, and the parts houses stock them: temperature sensors, bake, broil and convection elements, convection fan motors, cooling fans, thermal fuses, door locks, hydraulic SoftClose hinges, door gaskets, relay and display boards, steam pumps and tank sensors, and the hot-surface igniter for gas range ovens. Common parts ride on our truck; the rest are ordered and the technician returns. The slow case is the older SC301 and SC302 ovens, whose relay and display board kit (00702450) is discontinued; that board goes out for rebuilding, and we tell you the timing first.
Why a built-in Thermador oven often has to come out of the wall
A Thermador wall oven is a heavy steel box screwed into a cabinet, and almost everything that fails on it lives where you cannot reach it: the bake element under the sealed oven floor, the relay board, cooling fan and thermal fuse behind the back and top panels, the lock motor above the door.
On one oven repair in Alexandria our technician had to lift a Thermador wall oven clear of its cabinet and lay it on moving blankets on the kitchen floor before the repair could even start; there is almost no way to reach the back of one while it sits in the wall. That is why we come with floor protection and shoe covers, why a wall-oven repair is a bigger job than a range repair, and why we explain what has to come apart before anything is touched.
A double oven is the same job twice as heavy, and the combination and steam models add a second cavity with its own board and fan and, on the steam oven, a pump and tank of its own.
Steam ovens and the water in this area
The steam and convection ovens boil tap water in a small generator every time you cook, and whatever is dissolved in that water stays behind as scale. That matters here: the tap water in Washington DC, Montgomery County and Northern Virginia is moderately hard to hard.
Thermador's guide says to descale regularly no matter how hard the water is, using its own descaler and the Descaling program in the CLEAN menu, and warns that a session takes 70 to 90 minutes and cannot be interrupted. It also says to fill the tank with regular tap water, not distilled.
When an oven has run for a year or two without that, the generator's heating element and the fill pump scale up, steam gets weak and the oven heats slowly. Descaling can bring it back; the pump or the generator is replaced only when it does not.
Self-clean, the lock and what to try before you call
Thermador's wall ovens run a self-clean of 2 hours or more, and the hours at that heat are when thermal fuses open, door locks stick and cooling fans get found out. A few things are worth trying first, all from Thermador's own support pages. A door that will not open after a clean is normal until the oven cools; the latch releases on its own.
A latch that stays out after the oven is cold can often be reset by switching the breaker off for one minute. Warm air and a little steam from the vent is the cooling system working, not a fault. An oven that bakes consistently hot or cold has a temperature offset setting that moves it in 5-degree steps up to 35 degrees either way. An E code can be silenced with any key and cleared with one reset.
If the oven stays dead, the code returns, the broiler keeps cutting out or the door still sags, that is an oven repair call. We book a 2-hour window, the technician calls about 15 minutes before arriving, and you get the full price at the oven before anything is replaced. Do you repair Thermador wall ovens or only the ovens in ranges?
Both. Single and double wall ovens in the Masterpiece and Professional lines, the combination ovens with a microwave or speed oven on top, the 30-inch steam and convection ovens, and the electric or gas ovens inside Pro Harmony and Pro Grand ranges. We also work on the older Thermador built-ins, as long as the part that failed can still be had.
How much does a Thermador oven repair cost?

My Thermador oven went completely dead after a self-clean cycle. Is it ruined?
Usually not. The common cause is a thermal fuse or high-limit switch that opened when the oven got hotter than the cooling fan could handle, or a door lock that is still engaged. We replace the fuse, find out why it tripped and check the cooling fan so it does not happen again. The oven cavity itself is rarely the problem.
The display shows an E code. Can you tell me what it means over the phone?
Usually not, and neither can Thermador's website, which lists meanings only for three codes tied to Home Connect software updates and says the rest need a technician. Note the code, press any key to stop the beeping and try one reset at the breaker. If it comes back, our technician reads it in the oven's service mode and tests the circuit it points to, most often the temperature sensor, the door lock or the cooling fan.
Where do the parts come from, and how long do they take?
Thermador is a BSH brand, so its parts come through the same channel as the ones for Bosch appliance repair, and the major parts distributors stock them. Common items ride on the truck; anything else is ordered and the technician returns to fit it. My steam oven keeps telling me to descale. Is something wrong with it?
Probably not; it is doing its job. Thermador says every steam oven needs regular descaling no matter how hard or soft the water, and around here the water is on the hard side. Run the Descaling program from the CLEAN menu with Thermador's descaler and give it the full 70 to 90 minutes. If it still makes weak steam or heats slowly after that, the generator or the fill pump has scaled up past what the program can clear, and that is when to call us.
Is my twenty-year-old Thermador oven worth fixing?
Often yes, if the part exists. Elements, sensors, hinges and igniters for the older built-ins are still made. The sticking point is the electronic control: on the SC301 and SC302 series the relay and display board is discontinued, so the fix is a rebuilt board and a longer wait. A built-in oven is sized to its cabinet cutout, so a replacement can mean cabinet work as well as the oven, which is worth knowing before you decide.
