Why Does My Dryer Keep Shutting Off Mid-Cycle?

A dryer that stops before clothes are dry is deeply frustrating --- especially when you have to babysit it through multiple restarts to finish a load. This problem has several possible causes, most of which are identifiable without specialized tools. Here's how to diagnose it.

1. Clogged Exhaust Vent (Most Common)

This is the single most common cause of dryers shutting off mid-cycle. When the exhaust vent is restricted, heat builds up inside the dryer drum. Safety thermostats and thermal cutoffs trip to prevent the machine from reaching dangerously high temperatures --- shutting the heat off or stopping the cycle entirely.

Clue: if the dryer shuts off after roughly the same amount of time every cycle (often 20--30 minutes), and the machine and clothes feel very hot when you open it, a clogged vent is almost certainly the cause.

Fix: clean the lint screen, inspect the duct for kinks, and have the full vent cleaned professionally if the duct run is long.

2. Overheating Due to Overloaded Drum

Stuffing too many clothes into the dryer reduces airflow through the load, causing heat to build up faster than it can be vented. The high-limit thermostat trips, shutting off heat or the entire cycle.

Try reducing load size by 25% and see if the problem resolves. If it does, the machine was overloaded. If the problem persists with a normal load, the vent or a component is the cause.

3. Faulty Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates drum temperature by cycling the heating element on and off during the cycle. When it fails in the 'open' position --- reading the drum as too hot even when it isn't --- it continually shuts off the heat, drastically extending drying time or stopping the cycle.

A technician can test thermostats quickly with a multimeter. Thermostat replacement is inexpensive and restores proper temperature cycling.

4. Worn or Failing Motor

The dryer motor runs the drum and the blower fan. As motors age, their windings overheat more quickly under load. A motor with thermal protection will shut itself off when it overheats --- then restart once it cools. If your dryer shuts off, restarts on its own after 10--15 minutes, then shuts off again at roughly the same point in the cycle --- a failing motor is a likely culprit.

5. Door Switch Problems

The door switch tells the dryer that the door is closed. On some dryers, a worn or intermittently failing door switch can cause the dryer to think the door has opened mid-cycle, stopping operation. This is more common on machines where the door doesn't close with a firm click.

Test: with the dryer running, firmly press on the door. If the dryer keeps running but stops when you release, the door latch or switch is the problem.

6. Control Board or Timer Fault

Less commonly, a faulty electronic control board or a worn mechanical timer can cause the cycle to terminate prematurely. Control board issues tend to cause erratic or inconsistent behavior --- sometimes the dryer runs fine, sometimes it stops. Mechanical timer problems are more consistent --- the cycle always stops at the same point.

Diagnostic Approach

  • Start with the vent --- clean it before assuming any part has failed
  • Try a smaller load --- if the problem goes away, the drum was overloaded
  • Time when the dryer stops --- consistent timing suggests thermal protection tripping
  • Check if the dryer restarts on its own --- motor thermal protection typically allows restart after cooling
  • If none of the above explains it --- have a technician test thermostats, the motor, and control board
