Which KitchenAid dishwashers we work on
Whirlpool builds KitchenAid dishwashers alongside Whirlpool dishwashers and Maytag dishwashers, so we treat them as one family. The model tag is on the left side of the tub frame, visible with the door open. Numbers starting KUD are the older units; Superba and Architect Series II are older line names you may see on the door badge, not model numbers.
Current numbers start KDT (top controls, usually with a bar handle), KDP (top controls, pocket handle) or KDF (front controls), followed by a series number; the higher series add the FreeFlex or 360° Max Jets third rack and the Fan-Enabled or Advanced ProDry drying system, which pairs a heating element with a fan. Models with several wash arms feed them through a diverter, so that is one more seal and motor to check when they leak or wash unevenly.
Parts
KitchenAid dishwasher parts are Whirlpool parts with W part numbers, and most fit Whirlpool, Maytag and JennAir dishwashers as well, so they are easy to source. The parts that come up on this platform are the upper rack adjuster kit, door gaskets, drain pumps, water inlet valves, the soil sensor and thermistor, and thermal cut-offs. Diverter motors, the pump and motor assembly, heating elements and control boards are model-specific. Common parts are on the truck; anything else is ordered by model number and the technician returns to fit it. The model number on the tub frame tells us which version of a part your dishwasher takes, because Whirlpool has superseded many of them more than once.

The control board on the oldest KitchenAid dishwashers
If your KitchenAid is twenty years old or more, it may have one of the control boards that were the subject of a class settlement against Whirlpool covering dishwashers sold under the Whirlpool, Kenmore and KitchenAid names. The boards could overheat. Actual failures were rare, so this is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason not to ignore a hot smell or a browned spot at the control panel.
Those units carry a thermal cut-off that opens to protect the board, which is why an old KitchenAid can go completely dead with no lights. That cut-off is never bypassed. We replace it, check the board and its connections, and explain in plain English whether the board should be replaced or the machine retired.

Do you repair older KitchenAid dishwashers, or only the newer ones?

My KitchenAid dishwasher shows F9E1. Can I clear it myself?
Sometimes. F9E1 is KitchenAid's long-drain code. Pull the lower rack, turn the upper filter a quarter turn counterclockwise, lift it out and rinse both filters under the tap. Check that the drain hose under the sink is not kinked and, on a new install, that the knockout plug was removed from the garbage disposer. Then cut the power for 30 seconds and try again. If it still will not drain, the drain pump or check valve is usually next, and that is a visit.
Is an older KitchenAid dishwasher worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Often it is worth a look, because the parts are Whirlpool parts and Whirlpool keeps replacing old part numbers with current ones; the rack adjuster kit, for example, supersedes five earlier numbers and fits units back to the KUD series. The technician gives you the full repair price at your home before any work starts, so you can weigh it against a new machine with a real number in hand. If you decide not to repair, you pay only the $89 visit.
Why does my KitchenAid dishwasher leave white film on the glasses?
Nearly always the water. The water across this area is moderately hard to hard, and the film is the calcium and magnesium left behind when the water dries. Turn the rinse aid dispenser up a step, and run a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar through an empty hot cycle every month or two. If the film comes with gritty dishes or a cold tub at the end of the cycle, that is the machine, and we would look at the filters, the heater and the rinse aid dispenser.
