GE Dryer Repair in Northern Virginia, DC & Maryland
GE dryers reach us in three shapes: the 27-inch dryer that matches a GE top-load washer, the GE and GE Profile front-load dryers, and the Spacemaker laundry center with the dryer stacked on its own washer. Our GE dryer repair covers all of them, electric and gas, across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. Our technician finds exactly what is wrong at your home and gives you the full repair price before any work starts.

What usually goes wrong
GE dryer faults, in the order we see them
- 1
The drum turns but the air stays cold (electric models)
Most probably
- One half of the 240-volt double breaker tripped: the motor runs on 120 volts, the heater cannot
- A blown thermal fuse or an open safety thermostat, usually after the airflow was restricted
- A heating element with a broken coil
- A burnt or loose wire at the terminal block where the cord connects
- 2
Gas dryer: the igniter glows, then the flame never comes
Most probably
- Worn solenoid coils on the gas valve that no longer open it once the igniter is hot
- A flame sensor that never tells the valve to open
- A cracked igniter that glows weakly or not at all
- The gas shut-off behind the dryer turned off, or a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat open
- 3
Nothing happens when you press start, or the timer knob spins loose
Most probably
- The plastic insert in the timer knob or the timer shaft cracked or stripped
- A door switch that is scorched or pushed in, so the dryer thinks the door is open
- A push-to-start switch or a timer with a dead contact
- A safety fuse blown by lint packed around it, which stops the motor on many GE models
- On electronic models, a control board fault, or a 2019-and-newer board never given its model 'personality' setting
- 4
Squeaking, grinding, thumping or a metal scrape while it tumbles
Most probably
- Upper plastic drum glides worn thin or cracked, so the drum scrapes the front bulkhead
- The rear drum shaft and bearing cup worn, rusted or pitted, which grinds and thumps
- A frayed belt, which thumps once per turn, or a dry idler pulley, which squeals
- A coin or paper clip caught in the felt front seal, or lint and debris in the blower wheel
- 5
Takes two or three cycles, the cabinet gets hot, and moisture beads on the door
Most probably
- Lint in the vent run, a crushed or plastic flex duct, or a wall cap stuck shut
- The dryer wired to a 120-volt circuit, which GE says makes drying take as much as three times longer
- A dryer that is not level, so the load tumbles away from the moisture-sensor rods
- A too-large load, or a washer that is not spinning the water out
- 6
The motor hums but the drum does not turn
Most probably
- A broken drive belt, or one slipping under a heavy wet load of towels or jeans
- A seized idler pulley or a rear bearing so worn the drum will not turn by hand
- A small sock pulled down the lint-filter slot and jammed in the blower
- A motor with tired start windings that only runs if the drum is spun by hand
- 7
Spacemaker laundry center: the dryer on top runs cold
Most probably
- A thermal fuse that keeps blowing because the short, tight vent behind a stacked unit is choked with lint
- An open heating element or safety thermostat
- A duct crushed flat by a unit pushed hard into a closet
- 8
Auto Dry never seems to finish, or the timer will not move
Most probably
- Normal behaviour up to a point: on GE sensor cycles the timer only advances while the heat is cycled off
- A dryer tilted front to back, so the clothes ride away from the sensor rods
- A restricted vent keeping the drum air cool, so the heat never cycles off
- A timer that has failed, if the clothes are dry and the knob never left its starting point
Models and series
Which GE dryers we work on
The lines we see most: the 27-inch dryers that match a GE top-load washer, with a 7.2 cubic foot aluminized alloy drum; the GE and GE Profile front-load dryers; the Unitized Spacemaker laundry centers, the 27-inch GUD27ESSMWW and the 24-inch GUD24ESSMWW, which is under two feet wide and fits closets a standard dryer cannot; and the GE Profile UltraFast Combo PFQ97HSPVDS, a ventless heat-pump washer-dryer that runs on a normal 120-volt outlet with no vent at all.
The 27-inch dryers have a familiar set of weak points: the timer knob insert cracks, the upper drum glides wear thin and scrape, the rear bearing cup wears and thumps, and a frayed belt slaps. The laundry centers add a short, tight vent that blows thermal fuses when it clogs.
Parts
The parts that fail on GE dryers are mostly small ones: thermal fuses, safety and cycling thermostats, heating elements, belts, idler pulleys, drum glides, rear bearing kits, felt seals, door switches, start switches and timer knobs, plus igniters, flame sensors and gas valve coils on the gas models. Those are the ones we carry on the truck. Control boards, motors, complete gas valve assemblies and anything for the UltraFast heat-pump combo are ordered for your exact model number, and the technician comes back to fit them. Whichever part it turns out to be, the repair carries the 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.
Electric or gas: read the plug before you call
Every GE dryer we repair is one of two machines. The electric ones need their own 240-volt circuit on a two-pole 30-amp breaker, and GE's own guidance is blunt about it: the motor will run on 120 volts, but the heater will not come on without the second leg. So a dryer that runs with no heat is a breaker question before it is a parts question, and half of a double breaker can trip without the handle moving.
The gas ones plug into a normal outlet and light through a chain: the igniter glows, a flame sensor sees it, and solenoid coils open the gas valve. Each link fails in its own way, and each one is tested on the visit.
When you call, tell us which you have. Look behind the dryer: a thick three- or four-prong plug means electric; an ordinary plug with a gas line and a shut-off valve beside it means gas. It tells us which parts to have with us.
Stacked units and closet laundry
In an apartment, a condo or a townhouse, a GE dryer is usually the top half of a Spacemaker laundry center or a front-loader stacked on its washer in a hallway closet. That changes the repair in two ways. The unit has to slide out before anything can be tested, and the vent behind it is short, kinked and easy to choke, which is why the thermal fuse on these keeps blowing. On a dryer repair in Arlington, a GE laundry center was tumbling but running cold on every setting, which is the complaint we get most on stacked units.
GE also warns that a dryer draws its air in along the floor at the front, so a closet door that shuts on it, or laundry piled against it, starves it of air. We bring the floor protection to slide the unit out and put it back, and we look at the duct behind it before we hand it back to you.
The 24-inch Spacemaker, under two feet wide, is the one that turns up where a standard 27-inch machine never fit. It is the same repair in a smaller box, with less room to reach anything.
What the $89 visit gets you on a GE dryer
Our visit fee is $89. The technician finds exactly what's wrong and gives you the full repair price at your home — no pressure. If you go ahead, the $89 counts toward the repair, and every repair has a 90-day warranty.
We book a 2-hour window and the technician calls about 15 minutes before arriving. The technician comes in uniform, puts on shoe covers, lays floor protection, and explains what was found in plain English before anything is touched. Common parts ride on the truck; the rest are ordered and the technician returns.
You pay when the work is done, and the invoice comes by email or text. Someone answers the phone 24/7, and most days we can be there the same day.

FAQ
GE dryer repair: frequently asked questions
My GE dryer runs but there is no heat. Is that a big repair?
Often not. Check your breaker panel first: an electric GE dryer will run on half of its 240-volt supply and never heat, and one half of the double breaker can trip without looking tripped. Flip it fully off and back on. If it still runs cold, the usual suspects are the thermal fuse, a thermostat or the heating element, all of which we test on the visit. Our visit fee is $89, the technician gives you the full repair price at your home, and if you go ahead the $89 counts toward the repair.
How old is too old for a GE dryer to be worth fixing?
Age alone does not decide it on a GE dryer, because the parts that wear are small ones. What matters is what has failed. A belt, a fuse, a set of glides, a bearing kit or a knob on an otherwise sound machine is worth doing. A motor plus a bearing plus a heater on a rusted cabinet is the point where we say so at your home and let you decide with the full price in front of you.
Do you repair GE Spacemaker laundry centers and stacked dryers?
Yes. Stacked units and laundry centers are on our list, residential and commercial, and the dryer half of a Spacemaker is repaired the same way as a stand-alone GE dryer once it is out of the closet. Tell us on the phone that it is stacked or in a closet, so the technician plans the time to slide it out and put it back with the floor protected.
Do you work on the GE Profile UltraFast washer-dryer combo?
Yes. We repair washer-dryer combos, and the UltraFast is a different machine from a regular GE dryer: it dries with a ventless heat pump on a normal 120-volt outlet, so there is no vent to clog and no 240-volt heater to lose. Most of its parts are ordered for the exact model, so expect the diagnosis on the first visit and the technician back to fit the part.
Do you carry GE dryer parts on the truck?
The common ones, yes: belts, thermal fuses, thermostats, heating elements, idler pulleys, drum glides, bearing kits, door switches and timer knobs. Control boards, motors and gas valve assemblies are ordered for your model, and the technician comes back to fit them. Every repair, whichever part it needed, carries a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.
Is my GE dryer gas or electric? How do I tell?
Look at the plug. An electric GE dryer has a thick three- or four-prong plug on its own 240-volt outlet. A gas GE dryer has an ordinary plug plus a gas line with a shut-off valve behind it. If you can read the model number off the sticker on the dryer, that settles it too, and it lets us bring the right parts.
