Which Whirlpool washers we work on
The model number tells you the platform: WTW is a top-loader and WFW is a front-loader.
The old direct-drive top-loaders with the tall agitator are simple and long-lived. Weak points: the motor coupling, the lid switch and the clutch.
Duet front-loaders wear at the door boot, the drain pump and the tub bearings. Cabrio top-loaders are the high-efficiency machines, most with a flat wash plate instead of an agitator, known for the F51 code from the rotor position sensor and for bearings that roar in spin.
Most Whirlpool and Kenmore top-loaders made from 2010 on, and the Maytag washers of those years, use the vertical modular (VMW) drive. On those the shift actuator, the suspension rods, the splutch clutch and the lid lock fail most. The current 2-in-1 removable-agitator models are the same family; their lid lock takes a few seconds to engage; that is normal.

Whirlpool washer parts are shared across Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore, so almost everything is stocked by the distributors. Why does my Whirlpool top-loader fill and agitate but not spin?
Three parts cause most of these. On an older direct-drive machine it is usually the motor coupling or the lid switch. On a VMW top-loader made from 2010 on it is usually the shift actuator, which moves the drive between agitate and spin. Our technician tests each one rather than swapping parts on a guess.
My Whirlpool Duet shows F21. What does that mean?
F21 is the long-drain code: the washer tried to drain and the water did not leave fast enough. Most often there is a coin, a hairpin or a wad of lint in the pump filter behind the lower front panel, or the pump itself has failed. We clear the filter, test the pump and replace it if it is dead.
The lid lock light is flashing. Do I need a new lid lock?
Not necessarily. On Whirlpool VMW top-loaders the lid lock light flashes for almost any stored fault, so it can be the lock, the shift actuator, the drain pump or the inlet valve. Our technician reads the codes out of the control first and replaces only the part that is actually at fault.
