Freestanding French door units are most of what is out there: the standard-depth KRFF series, the counter-depth KRFC series (KRFC300, KRFC704) and the 25.8 cu. ft. five-door KRMF706. Many carry the Preserva Food Care System, which is two independent cooling systems for the fresh and frozen sides, plus ExtendFresh sensors that keep adjusting the temperature. Built-in KitchenAid refrigerators come as 36- and 42-inch French door (KBFN series) and 42- and 48-inch side-by-side (KBSN and KBSD series), with the earlier Architect Series II built-ins (KSSC42, KSSC48) still in service.
The weak points follow the design more than the year: in-door ice systems that depend on water pressure, the filter and a tight seal; freezer frost when a door or the center mullion gasket lets summer humidity in; and the PO alert after an outage, which worries people more than it should.
Parts
Because KitchenAid is a Whirlpool brand, its refrigerator parts are Whirlpool parts. The same ice maker module, water inlet valve, evaporator fan, defrost heater and thermostat, start relay and control boards also serve Whirlpool refrigerators and Maytag, JennAir and Amana models, which is why they are rarely hard to find. Hard water and the ice maker
The tap water in this region is hard, and in the District it gets harder in the warm months. That matters to an ice maker.
Those minerals leave scale wherever water sits still: inside the water inlet valve on the back of the unit, along the fill tube to the ice maker, and in the filter. Built-in KitchenAid units and older kitchens

Why does my KitchenAid make hollow or tiny ice cubes?
Nearly always the fill. KitchenAid wants 30 to 120 psi at the refrigerator; below that, or with a clogged filter, the tray does not fill properly and the cubes come out hollow or small. A freezer running above 5°F slows ice down too. We measure the pressure and the temperature first, then look at the inlet valve and the ice maker itself.
