In Wyngate and the other streets of ramblers and split-levels, a basement dryer sits below ground level. Its exhaust runs along a joist bay, turns up, turns again at the rim joist and only then reaches the hood on the side of the house, and lint settles at every turn. The run narrows slowly. Loads take longer, then the safety thermostat starts cutting the heat, then the dryer quits mid-cycle or blows its thermal fuse. On the wooded slopes of Carderock Springs the run to open air is longer still. The Flow Sense warning on an LG dryer means the same thing: a restricted exhaust. If you smell burning, stop using the dryer.
