What usually goes wrong

Which Maytag washers we work on
Maytag's washers fall into a few families.
Neptune, the old front-loader, the oldest now nearly thirty years old: the door-latch wax motor, the control boards and the mold that ended in a class-action settlement.
Bravos and Bravos XL: high-efficiency top-loaders that share their design with Whirlpool's Cabrio. The weak part is the rotor position sensor on the motor, which shows as F51 and a machine that quits before spin.
Centennial and today's MVW and MTW top-loaders, agitator or impeller, the newer ones with the Extra Power button and the Pet Pro hair filter: the shift actuator and the lid lock are the usual failures.
Today's front-loaders with the Fresh Hold option: door seal, drain pump and door lock.

What to tell us when you call about a Maytag washer
Two things shorten the visit. The first is the model number on the machine's sticker, read out in full: MVW and MTW numbers are top-loaders, and the rest of the number tells us which parts fit. The second is exactly what the display shows. On a Maytag the codes mean specific things: LdL is a lid that will not lock, LdU a lid that will not unlock, lid means the lid was left open, OL an overloaded basket, Ofb an off-balance load, Sud too many suds, drn a drain problem, and F8 E1 or LF a slow fill. A code you write down before you unplug the machine is worth more than one you half remember.
Then unplug it for five minutes. Maytag's own first step for an F7 E1 is to cycle the power, and a power cycle clears a real share of one-off faults. Hard water and Maytag front-loaders
The water across this area is moderately hard to hard; our washer repair in Alexandria page describes the scale it leaves on inlet screens. Hard water does two more things to a front-loader. It makes detergent less effective, so people add more, and the extra soap leaves a film on the drum and in the fold of the door seal that the musty smell grows on. And it leaves mineral scale wherever water sits still, which in a front-loader is the bottom of the seal and the pump housing.
So for a Maytag front-loader here: use less HE detergent than the cap suggests, run the Clean Washer cycle monthly, wipe the fold of the seal and leave the door cracked between loads, the same routine as in our guide to cleaning a washing machine. The Fresh Hold option on newer models keeps a finished load fresh for up to 16 or 24 hours, which helps when you forget a load, but it does not replace a clean seal.
