Which LG refrigerators we work on
Most LG fridges are French-door models, three-door or four-door, known by their feature names: InstaView, the knock-twice glass panel; Door-in-Door; Craft Ice, with a second ice maker for round ice; and the Counter-Depth MAX and Standard-Depth MAX lines. LG STUDIO and LG SIGNATURE sit above those. Side-by-side and bottom-freezer units use the same cooling parts underneath.
The known weak point is the Inverter Linear Compressor. Units built from 2014 through 2017 were the subject of a class action LG settled in 2020 after they stopped cooling. LG's written warranty now covers the sealed system and compressor for five years with labor, then the compressor part alone through year ten with labor charged. Later builds hold up better, but a fridge with an InstaView panel and two ice makers has more fans, ducts and door wiring to fail.
Parts
The parts that fail most on LG refrigerators: the evaporator fan motor, the defrost heater and defrost sensor, the ice maker assembly and the fan for the door's ice compartment, the inlet valve, door gaskets, the main control board, and, rarest but most serious, the linear compressor and its inverter board.
Fans, sensors, inlet valves and defrost parts are shared across many LG models, so they are often on the truck or a day or two away. Ice makers, control boards and compressors are matched to your model and serial number and are ordered, usually a few days. Compressor work is sealed-system work, so it is a return visit. The $89 counts toward the repair when you go ahead.
What the linear compressor problem means for your fridge
LG built its refrigerators around the Inverter Linear Compressor. On a run of units from 2014 through 2017 it failed early, sometimes within a couple of years. The pattern is always the same: the fridge sounds like it is running, the lights are on, and the food is warm. There is usually no error code. LG settled a class action over it in September 2020.
Before you pay anyone for a compressor, look at your purchase date. LG's written warranty gives one year of parts and labor on the whole fridge, five years of parts and labor on the sealed system and the compressor, and then the compressor part alone from year six through year ten, with labor charged. A fridge inside that window has a claim with LG worth making.
Outside the window, replacing a compressor is a sealed-system job, the biggest repair a refrigerator can have. When our technician confirms a dead compressor, you get the full price at your home and a straight opinion on whether that money is well spent on a fridge of that age. Try these before you book the visit
A few LG faults clear themselves, and we would rather you keep the $89. For a fan error such as E FF or E rF, LG's own advice is to unplug the fridge or flip its breaker, wait about five minutes, and plug it back in. If the fan was locked in ice, LG says leaving the doors open for a day in summer, longer in winter, lets it thaw; if the code comes back after that, the fan or the defrost system needs a technician.
For an ice maker not making ice, check the freezer setting. LG says the freezer must hold below 19 degrees F and recommends minus 4 F for ice. A newly installed or newly reset fridge can take up to 24 hours to reach temperature and start making ice, and the ice maker has its own on-off switch on the side of the unit, which is easy to knock. If the freezer is cold, the switch is on, a day has passed and the bin is still empty, that is when to call.
One warning. If the compressor is running but both compartments are warm, none of the above will help, and every hour of waiting is food. Empty it into coolers and call; someone answers the phone 24/7 and we run same-day service most days.

Why does the ice maker in my LG French-door keep stopping?
The ice maker on these models sits in the door and depends on a small fan and a duct to bring cold air over from the freezer. When that duct ices up, the fan dies, or the wiring through the door hinge breaks, the ice compartment goes warm and production stops. A freezer set too warm does the same thing. We test the compartment temperature and the airflow before we replace the ice maker itself.
The freezer works but the fridge part is warm. Do I need a new refrigerator?
Almost never for this fault. On an LG it is usually the defrost system letting ice build up on the coils, or the evaporator fan stalling in that ice, and both are ordinary repairs. We clear the ice, replace the failed heater, sensor or fan, and every repair has a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.
Do you carry LG refrigerator parts on the truck?
The common ones, yes: fan motors, defrost heaters and sensors, inlet valves and the like. Ice makers, control boards and compressors are specific to your model and serial number, so the technician orders the right one and comes back to fit it. Bring the model number from the sticker inside the fridge to the phone call and it speeds everything up.
Should I repair or replace an LG refrigerator that stopped cooling?
It depends on what failed and how old the fridge is. A fan, a sensor or an ice maker is a clear repair on any age of fridge. A compressor is the biggest job a refrigerator can have, and on an older unit outside LG's warranty the honest answer is sometimes to replace.
